LG Optimus 3D vs HTC EVO 3D – Full Specs Compared

LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D are two Android phones with glasses free 3D displays. The technology is moving at a furious pace, and now the race seems to be among smartphones that are 3D capable. First it was LG that created a sensation by launching the world’s first smartphone that was 3D capable, and now HTC has geared up with its latest smartphone that matches LG’s device feature by feature. Let us see the difference between LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D that have taken the market by a storm and promise to be harbingers of the technology of tomorrow.

LG Optimus 3D

LG seems to have taken the lead in manufacturing world’s first smartphone with a glass free 3D display. LG Optimus 3D was unveiled at the 2011 Mobile World Congress and aroused curiosity among smartphone buyers. The key feature in LG Optimus 3D is the capability to record, share and view 3D content without 3D glasses. The 4.3″ WVGA (800 x 480) display in LG Optimus 3D supports glasses free 3D viewing up to 720p and 2D multimedia content up to 1080p. The display uses the IPS technology.

LG Optimus 3D has a powerful 1 GHz dual core OMAP 4 processor from Texas Instrument and runs on Android OS Froyo 2.2 (upgradeable to Froyo 2.3). The OMAP 4430 chipset with 1GHz dual core processor, PowerVR SGX 540 for GPU, dual channel architecture and dual 512 MB main memory offers an enormous power to the phone while consuming low battery power.

The device has a dual camera with the rear one being dual 5MP 3D Stereoscopic lens with LED flash for 3D recording and the front VGA camera for video calling. It is equipped with accelerometer, proximity sensor and gyro sensor and has touch sensitive controls.

The phone has dimensions of 5.07 x 2.68 x 0.47 inches and weighs just 168 gm making it quite a handy device. Optimus 3D has an internal storage capacity of 8 GB which is expandable up to 32 GB using micro SD cards.

For connectivity, LG Optimus 3D is Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Bluetooth and provides network connectivity with HSPA+. It is also GPS enabled.

LG also has introduced a new user experience with LG 3D UI that supports most of the 3D file formats and offers native camera application for 3D video capture. A 3D hot key is available for one touch switch to this 3D UI. The 3D UI offers a unique 3D menu for 5 applications namely gallery, camera, games and apps, YouTube 3D and a 3D guide. What is great is that YouTube 3D is exclusive to the users of this smartphone for a few months.

Other than the 3D UI, the user interface is the LG standard like the one on LG Optimus 2X.

Viewing in 3D is not easy and the device must be held at a constant angle otherwise there is distortion and the 3D effect is gone. Even if we were to discount 3D, the solid specifications of LG Optimus make it a decent smartphone.

HTC EVO 3D

Close on the heels of the launch of LG Optimus 3D has come HTC’s latest smartphone called EVO 3D, which is 3D capable. It is really pleasing to see things in 3D without the glasses, and coupled with the sensational HTC sense user interface, this smartphone provides a mesmerizing experience to the users.

On the outlook Evo 3D is similar to the previous Evo 4G. With a QHD display of 4.3” that is 3D capable, it is surprisingly compact with dimensions of 4.96 x 2.56 x 0.47 inches and also is lighter at just 170 gm. The display is at a resolution of 960×540 pixels which is bright enough to be read in broad daylight.

The phone has a very high speed 1.2 GHz Dual Core Qualcomm MSM 8660 Snapdragon processor with 1 GB RAM that provides a fast and smooth experience to the users. Like other smartphones, it has all the sensors such as gyro sensor, accelerometer, digital compass, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor. A 4GB memory is included and the memory can be expanded up to 32GB with microSD card. The battery is 1730 mAh Li-ion.

EVO 3D is a dual camera device, at the rear dual 5 MP Stereoscopic lens with auto focus and LED flash that can record HD videos in both 2D (1080p) and 3D (720p). There is a switch toggle between 2D and 3D mode. The user can instantly view them on 3D capable TV’s with DLNA and HDMI out. There is a quick lookup tool that allows users to connect instantly to websites like Google directory, YouTube, or Wikipedia. It has direct integration with both FaceBook and Twitter and the user can share photos and videos instantly with friends on various social networking sites. For connectivity, it is Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n with Bluetooth v3.0.

It’s coming to US with Sprint and supports 3G CDMA and 4G WiMAX.
