Literature vs English

Literature and English are two words that are often used as words with one and the same meaning. Actually they are to be looked upon as two different words with different meanings.

Literature is a branch of knowledge that deals with the study of various literary forms such as poetry, prose, novel, science fiction, play, essay and the like. On the other hand, English is a language spoken throughout the world.

It is important to know that literature is found in the English language. Shakespeare, Chaucer, Dryden, Shelly, Keats and Wordsworth are some of the writers and playwrights of the past that had made English literature very proud indeed. On the other hand, it should be noted that all the said writers wrote their works in the English language.

Thus, English is a language that has the ability to create a wonderful literature. Hence, it can be said that English is a subset of literature. On the other hand, literature is studied at the college and university level as a branch of study.

In the same way, English language is also studied as a special subject, and a major subject in the undergraduate and post graduate levels. This paves the way for the idea of togetherness in their meanings. An undergraduate course in the English language is called otherwise as Bachelor of literature too.

It is very important to know that every language in the world has got its own literature of that matter. There are a good number of writers, poets and dramatists that have created wonderful works in almost every language of the world. Hence the world literature is said to be very vast and wide. Language forms the very basis of any literature for that matter. These are the important differences between English and literature.
