There is a marked difference between a map and a globe. A map is a two-dimensional representation of a certain region of the world. A globe, on the contrary, is a three-dimensional representation of the whole of the world. Here are the definitions of map and globe as given by the Oxford dictionary. A map is “a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.” A globe is “A spherical representation of the earth or the constellations with a map on the surface. ” Apart from this information about the two words, map and globe, we can also see that both map and globe are used as nouns as well as verbs.

What is a Globe?

A globe, on the contrary to a map, is a representation of the entire part of the world. Sometimes there may be other details on the globe such as climatic conditions, longitudes, latitudes and time. It is a matter of fact that a globe is a solid representation. It cannot be carried easily. You cannot fold it. It is a spherical and solid object that cannot be easily inserted into your bag or box. However, since a globe is a sphere you can easily revolve it around and see the places you want to see.

What is a Map?

A map is a detailed representation of a particular part of the world or a region of a particular country of the world. It is characterized by specific descriptions of the land. Though map in this article refers to maps drawn about land, there are star maps to show where constellations appear as well.

Examples of descriptions on maps include land routes such as rail routes and road routes. Sometimes there would be representations of specific kingdoms and empires on maps. A globe does not carry these representations.

A map is not a solid representation like a globe. It is, in fact, made of paper and is easily portable too. You can carry a map by folding it and keeping it in your school bag or your box.

One of the most important differences between a map and a globe is that a map is abstract in character. It has abstract representation of the details that are geographically and graphically represented on a globe. This is the reason a map is marked with designs, symbols and other features. Directions are easily represented on a globe due to its three-dimensional shape.
