Difference Between Matte Finish and Glossy Finish

April 17, 2011 Posted by Clarisse

Matte Finish vs Glossy Finish

Matt finish and glossy finish are the finish prints that you see in your photos. These two are commonly used when people want nice finishes on these pictures. They look like an art and exquisite in every finish print.

Matte Finish

Matte finish is a photo finish that is not shiny and glary. This is an extremely textured print that can resist against scratches and fingerprints. It does not reflect any glare or light which make it look dull. These are commonly used for wallet prints and other poster-size finishes. This can also express a professional look when done in black & white photos.

Glossy Finish

Glossy finish is a photo finish that is composed of a shiny, thick paper traditionally used by most individuals. It has a finer detail finish and is smooth to touch. The colors on the pictures when you use glossy finish are vibrant which makes it look bright and sunny. This also gives a tonal range and maximum detail. For photos that are focused when captured produce sharp and crisp images.

Difference between Matte Finish and Glossy Finish

Matte finish makes photos look grainy while gloss finishes makes photos look shiny. With matte finish smudges and fingerprints are not very visible while glossy finish is really susceptible to smudges and fingerprints. Matte finish produces less shiny pictures while glossy finish produces very shiny pictures. Matte finish produces visible patterns and textures when converted to digital or scanned as for glossy finish it doesn’t produce this kind of pattern. Matte finish can produce professional looks and the details are very visible; glossy finish has too much glare making it hard to see from particular angles.

Whether you use glossy or matte, it’s really up to you. Know what finish is appropriate for your photos. Each one has its pros and cons but with imagination you can make both look good more than its usual features. It’s all a matter of creativity.

In brief:

• Matte finish and gloss finish are the most used photo finishes

• Gloss finish is shiny and vibrant

• Matte finish is less shiny and may look dull in color.

• Gloss finish is more susceptible to smudges and fingerprints.

• Matte finish still has smudges and fingerprints but is not visible.
