MCA vs MBA

After engineering and medical, MBA is perhaps the most popular postgraduate course in the country. It is a degree course that introduces students to all aspects of a business such as finance, accounting, and human resources, marketing and operations management. Those who complete MBA get jobs in the middle managerial levels of organizations and are responsible for the performance and growth of the company. Of late, because of the sudden rise of use of computers and IT in the industry, there has been much interest in a course like MCA which prepares students to become experts in the use and application of computers in the industry. The two courses, though very dissimilar, provide ample opportunities in terms of employment and growth. Here is a brief explanation of the two post graduation courses.

MBA

MBA stands for Masters in Business Administration and prepares students to tackle the challenges of the industry. The course is divided into two years where the first year is devoted to wide ranging subjects such as accounting, economics, project management, human resources, planning and strategy, marketing, operations management and so on. Students pursue a specialized curriculum in the final year depending upon their chosen field of study. There has been a huge demand for MBA’s in the industry in all sectors of the economy such as manufacturing, banking, travel and transport, telecommunications and even service based industries.

MCA

MCA stands for Masters in Computer Application. It is a 2 year post graduate course similar to MBA though the focus in this course is more on computers and their applications in the industry. With almost all industries becoming over reliant on computers and information technology, students having qualified MCA are in great demand to not only look after the systems but also to devise ways to improve upon the efficiency and productivity of the organization.

In brief:

MCA vs MBA

• Though both MBA and MCA offer great career opportunities, they are different in nature and scope.

• While an MBA has a broader scope having to fulfill the responsibilities at the managerial levels, MCA is more of a techie concerned with the information systems and how to make the best possible use of the latest technologies.

• If you are more of a tech geek, an MCA is better for you, but if you have the gift of doing well as a team member and leader and manage people well, an MBA might be a better option for you.
