Difference Between Motorola Motoluxe and iPhone 4S

There are teams which call themselves arch rivals, then there are teams who are rivals, and there are also teams who are just rivals for the sake of been rivals. When we consider the two teams we are to talk about today, they are somewhere in between arch rivals and rivals, biased more towards arch rivals. While everybody tries to be rivals with Apple, there are known arch rivals like Samsung and HTC. Motorola in some sense qualifies to be an arch rival of Apple as well, but for the sake of the argument today, we’ll consider Motorola to be in between.

The two handsets we are going to compare are Motorola Motoluxe, which is a new handset from Motorola and Apple iPhone 4S. By now, we expect the smartphone specs to exceed that of iPhone 4S, but it certainly doesn’t seem the case in Motoluxe. Instead, from what we can deduce, it’s built with a slightly below spec than iPhone 4S expecting it to address a target market below iPhone 4S, yet giving the same look and feel.

Motorola Motoluxe

As we’ve mentioned, Motorola has made Motoluxe just below iPhone 4S. It comes with 800MHz processor on Qualcomm MSM7227A chipset with Adreno 200 GPU. The setup is powered by 512MB RAM and Android OS v2.3.7 Gingerbread and, since the phone hasn’t been released yet, we expect Motorola would provide the option to upgrade it to Android v4.0 IceCreamSandwich. It’s different than the normal Motorola built, and it comes in Licorice or White. It has a thin built with dimensions of 117.7mm x 60.5mm x 9.9mm and a weight of 123.6g. Motoluxe features a 4.0 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen with 480 x 854 pixels resolution and 245ppi pixel density. The screen certainly is not the state of the art nor is the resolution, yet we can say the screen would perform well in dark conditions.

It has 1GB internal storage with the facility to expand the memory up to 32GB with the use of a microSD card. Motorola has made sure to include a great camera with device introducing 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. It can also capture 720p HD videos as per rumors, but there isn’t solid information about it just yet. The front camera can be effectively utilized for video conferencing functionality bundled together with Bluetooth v3.0. Motoluxe has HSDPA connectivity for fast browsing speeds and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity. Since the handset can also act as a wi-fi hotspot, it’s pretty convenient way to share internet amongst friends. It also can wirelessly stream rich media content via DLNA.

The prerelease information seems to indicate that Motorola Motoluxe would have a lanyard slot that has a lighting effect. This would make it easier for you to see when you have a missed call, incoming text or an email which can come in handy. It has 1400mAh battery, which promises a talk time of 6 hours and 30 minutes while promising an impressive standby time of 19 days. 

Apple iPhone 4S

Apple iPhone 4S was launched with a big hype among the smartphone users. In fact, AT&T announced it as the most successful iPhone launch ever having more than 200,000 orders in the first 12 hours. It has the same look and feel of iPhone 4 and comes in both black and white. The stainless steel built gives it an elegant and expensive style, which appeals to the users. It also is almost the same size as iPhone 4 but slightly heavier weighing 140g. It features the generic Retina display, which Apple is extremely proud of. It comes with a 3.5 inches LED-backlit IPS TFT Capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors, and it scores the highest resolution as per Apple, which is 640 x 960 pixels. The pixel density of 330ppi is extremely high that Apple claims that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. This obviously results in crisp text and stunning images.

iPhone 4S comes with 1GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU in Apple A5 chipset and 512MB RAM. Apple claims this delivers two times more power and seven times better graphics. It is also highly energy efficient, which enables Apple to boast an outstanding battery life. iPhone 4S comes in 3 storage options; 16/32/64GB, without the option of expanding the storage with a microSD card. It utilizes the infrastructure provided by the carriers, to stay in touch at all times with HSDPA at 14.4Mbps and HSUPA at 5.8Mbps. In terms of camera, iPhone has an improved camera of 8MP that can record 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. It has a LED flash and touch to focus function along with Geo-tagging with A-GPS. The front VGA camera enables the iPhone 4S to make use of its application Facetime, which is a video calling application.

While iPhone 4S is graced with generic iOS applications, it comes with Siri, the most advanced digital personal assistant up to date. Now the iPhone 4S user can use voice to operate the phone, and Siri understands natural language. It also understands what the user meant; that is, Siri is a context aware application. It has its own personality, tightly coupled with the iCloud infrastructure. It can do basic tasks like setting up an alarm or reminder for you, sending a text or email, schedule meetings, follow your stock, make a phone call etc. It can also perform complex tasks like finding information for a natural language query, getting directions, and answering your random questions.

Apple is best known for its unbeatable battery life; thus, it would be normal to expect it to have a fabulous battery life. With the Li-Pro 1432mAh battery it has, iPhone 4S promises a talk time of 14h 2G and 8h 3G. Recently the users have been making complaints about the battery life and Apple has announced that it is working on a fix for that, while their update for iOS5 has partially solved the problem. We can stay tuned for updates and expect the Technological Innovator to come up with a fix for the problem at hand soon. 

Conclusion

The conclusion in this comparison is apparently too transparent. It would obviously end up naming Apple iPhone 4S as the superior product in many ways including but not limited to the processor, screen panel and resolution, additional services, and battery life etc. The setback involves the high investment associated with Apple iPhone 4S handset, and we sincerely do not think it would be too much compared to what the Motorola Motoluxe would be given at. Then again, the difference lies in the fact that these handsets are not intended for the same niche market. They are intended for different niche markets, and comparing them in that point of view certainly justifies, if one decides to invest in Motorola Motoluxe rather than Apple iPhone 4S.
