The name Mozzarella brings to mind images of dishes from Italian cuisine that are made using fresh cheese. In fact, Mozzarella and Italy have become synonymous with each other. Mozzarella is nothing else but fresh cheese. It is traditionally made from the milk of goat or cow. There is another cheese called Buffalo Mozzarella that has become very popular these days. Many people remain confused between Mozzarella and buffalo mozzarella, and there are even some who think that the two cheese varieties are the same. There are differences between these two varieties of fresh cheese that will be highlighted in this article.

Mozzarella

Mozzarella is a kind of cheese that has been made in Italy since time immemorial. However, it became very popular with the invention of modern systems of refrigeration and means of transport and communication that allowed the people in the west to get a taste of this ancient Italian cheesy secret. People still believe that to eat the real mozzarella one has to travel down to Naples in Italy though this fresh cheese is easily available in the markets and can be made in homes too. Mozzarella is very soft to touch and taste in your mouth, and it has to be eaten fresh. Preservatives and stabilizers have made it possible to buy processed mozzarella.

Mozzarella is kept suspended in brine and is melted over pizzas, to make them yummy. However, it can be sliced to make salads or used to make many other dishes. Made from the milk of goat, cow, or buffalo, there is always a milky flavor to mozzarella.

Buffalo Mozzarella

As the name implies, buffalo mozzarella is mozzarella made from the milk of water buffalo. In Italian, it is called mozzarella di bufala. Though water buffalos are found in many other places of the world, it is the fresh cheese made from the milk of buffalos in Italy that is considered the tastiest around the world.

Mozzarella vs Buffalo Mozzarella

• Mozzarella is the word that is used to refer to fresh cheese made from the milk of goat, cow or buffalo.

• If made from the milk of cow, mozzarella in Italy is called mozzarella fior di latte, and when made from the milk of water buffalo, it is called mozzarella di bufala.

• Buffalo mozzarella is considered to be creamier and cheesier than other types of mozzarella.

• Buffalo mozzarella is considered more flavorful than other mozzarella.
