NCR vs NCT

If you live in Delhi or in a surrounding area, you are probably aware of acronyms like NCR and NCT but for those who arrive here as a tourist or as students enrolling in various colleges for higher studies, the terms can sometimes be confusing. While NCR refers to National Capital Region, NCT is National Capital Territory. The terms appear to refer to some geographical areas that are similar. But these regions are different as will be clear after reading this article.

There are 9 districts in Delhi, and these districts containing 27 tehsils and 59 census towns make up NCT. NCT also consists of MCD, NDMC, and DCB, and 300 odd villages too. NCT contains Delhi metropolitan area, and Municipal Corporation of Delhi is one civic body that is one of the largest in the world, providing amenities to around 15 million people. Another civic body, NDMC, or New Delhi Municipal Council has a chairperson appointed by government of India in consultation with the chief minister of Delhi.

Let us take a look at geographical territory comprising NCR. This is not an area having any legal sanctity or jurisdiction, but has gained currency because of the prominence some satellite cities have got being near or adjacent to national capital. Delhi has 4 major cities lying just outside its boundaries. These are NOIDA, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. Out of these, NOIDA and Ghaziabad lie in the sate of Uttar Pradesh, while Faridabad and Gurgaon are in the state of Haryana. The genesis of NCR lies in the recommendations of Master Plan for the development of Delhi put forward in 1962, which suggested taking a up Delhi and some surrounding areas of important adjacent towns to develop as a metropolitan area to reduce population pressure on Delhi.

Difference Between NCR and NCT

• NCR and NCT are acronyms defining geographical regions in and around national capital.

• While NCT stands for National Capital Territory and delineates geographical boundaries of Delhi, NCR refers to National Capital Region and comprises not just Delhi but 4 satellite towns such as Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, ands NOIDA.

• While NCR is not an area having any legal jurisdiction, NCT is an actual map dividing Delhi into 9 districts for the purpose of administration.
