Netbook vs Netbook for Kids
Netbook and Netbook for kids are two variations in mobile computing devices. Technology is moving at a fast pace which can be seen in the manner in which gadgets are becoming smaller and lighter. First it was laptops that gave people liberty to carry their computer along with them. Later came into existence notebooks which were lighter and less capable than laptops. To cater to the needs of high flying executives and students, netbooks were developed that had fewer capabilities than notebooks, and now it is the turn of netbook for kids. Yes, companies have launched netbooks specifically for children in the age group of 6-12 having features to fulfill all the requirements of kids. This article intends to highlight the difference between a netbook and netbook for kids to help consumers make an informed choice when buying either of the two gadgets.
Netbook
A netbook is essentially a miniature laptop, with a smaller screen that is hinged to a keyboard in a briefcase like design of a laptop. The primary features of a netbook are its smaller size and weight, which is much less than a standard laptop making it easier to handle and carry. Netbook is also cheaper, costing a fraction of a laptop. The main difference with a netbook lies in the fact that it has no optical disc drive so that the user cannot watch CD’s or DVD’s.
Though a netbook can perform most of the tasks that a laptop can perform, it is limited by a smaller battery, slower processor, and limited storage space. Most standard laptops have a screen size of 14 inches, while netbooks have a screen size of 7-10 inches. Because of their smaller size and slower processor, netbook can be used for 5-6 hours on its battery whereas a laptop can be used for 1-2 hours only. Netbooks also allow for smooth surfing on the net which makes them so popular. So unless you require doing complex jobs possible only on a PC or laptop, it is much easy to carry a netbook with you.
Netbook for kids
When there has been so much being developed for the adults, how could companies ignore the demands and requirements of kids? Intel and Lenovo have in collaboration designed a netbook that has been made to fulfill the educational and entertainment requirements of kids. Aptly named Classmate, this netbook is far from what a standard netbook is primarily because it is meant to be used by kids in the age group of 6-12. It has power enough to meet the tasks that kids of this age would like to do. Classmate has Intel Atom N455 processor with 1-2 GB of RAM (available in both versions). It has Windows 7 as its operating system and a display screen measuring 10.1 inches (anti glare) which is quite large considering it is meant for kids only. It is Wi-Fi allowing kids to surf the net, has a 1.3 MP camera for fun, two inbuilt speakers and is available in models that run on either 3 or 6 cells.
This netbook is no laughing stock as it has an internal storage capacity of 8GB to 16GB SSD or 160 to 250 GB HDD. It has the same briefcase design that kids will appreciate like a laptop and weighs just 1.33 kg which is light enough for kids to carry it along with them.
It has been decided not to se4ll the fun device through a network of distributors as it has been made to be supplied to under privileged children in developing countries.
