When the car is slowing down using the break system, it generates the power and charge the battery pack. According to the ratings of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it has 99 MPGe (Miles per Gallon equivalent) with an average driving range of 73 miles. 99 MPGe is based on the ratings of gasoline the Leaf does not burn within the city, which is 106 MPGe, and the fuel it cannot use in highway travel, which is 92 MPGe. In addition, Leaf normally needs a charging time of 7 hours using 230 volt charging station (20 hours using 110-volt outlet). The main problem with Nissan Leaf is, it is impossible to run the car when the battery is dead. According to the tests and researches, approximately after 100 miles, it has to be recharged. Therefore, it has emission. However, the gasoline engine does not drive the wheels. It gives the power to charge the battery pack when the battery pack needs the energy from an outside source. According to the records of EPA, it allows to drive 35 miles using only battery power. In addition, with the aid of the gasoline generator that produces electricity, it can go up to 375 additional miles. Therefore, one can say that this is like a step up from a normal Hybrid car.
