Norfolk Terrier vs Norwich Terrier

Norfolk and Norwich terriers are very close relatives originated in the same country, and have very similar appearances. Therefore, it could easily cause much confusion to understand what is what. That brings a great interest to discuss the differences between Norfolk and Norwich terriers, and this article explores those distinctions.

Norfolk Terrier

Norfolk terrier is a small dog breed that originated in the Great Britain. They are good working dogs with a compact body, that measures about 23 to 25 centimetres of height at withers with a weight about 5 to 5.4 kilograms. Their rear limbs are slightly longer than the forelimbs. Norfolk terriers have dropped ears and a wire-haired coat. Their coat colour could contain all shades of red, wheaten, black and tan, and grizzle. They in fact, have a double coat with a rough outer coat and a smooth inner coat. Norfolk terriers are normally fearless dogs but rarely being aggressive. However, they are good companion animals and are good pets, especially with small children. Interestingly, they have very good vocals, and are barkers. Combing and grooming is an important component in looking after these dogs, and their lifespan lies around 12 to 15 years. However, Norfolk terriers have an incredibly long lifetime sometimes, as it could go as high as 19 years.

Norwich Terriers

Norwich terriers are small dogs and they originated in the United Kingdom. They were originally bred for the purposes of hunting small vermin or rodents. These are courageous, intelligent, and affectionate animals. Their height at withers is about 24 to 26 centimetres, and they weigh around 5 to 5.5 kilograms. These dogs have prick ears and a double-layered coat. Their coat comes with a range of colours including red, tan, wheaten, black and tan, and grizzle. Sometimes, people dock the tails of Norwich terriers but not very commonly. These dogs do not tend to bark unnecessarily, but usually like to warn the strangers with growls and barks. They are good hardy dogs and require exercises, as they are usually working dogs. Their energetic and active life has many things to offer for an owner as a playful dog. Therefore, they do not suit for caging and could be kept outside the door, as they do not usually leave their owners. These affectionate dogs have a long life that could last for 12 to 16 years.

What is the difference between Norfolk Terrier and Norwich Terrier?

· Both Norfolk and Norwich terriers originated in the United Kingdom, but they are two different breeds.

· Norfolk terriers are smaller than Norwich terriers. In fact, Norfolk terriers are the smallest of all the working terriers.

· Norfolk terriers have dropped ears, but the Norwich dogs have prick ears.

· Norfolk is a barking dog and very vocal, but the Norwich is generally a silent dog.

· Norwich terriers are stronger, more active, and more adapted for working purposes compared to Norfolk terriers.
