Difference Between Normal Vaginal Delivery and Assisted Vaginal Delivery

Normal Vaginal Delivery vs Assisted Vaginal Delivery

In Human, the pregnancy will start with fertilization of the ovum and implantation of the zygote. And pregnancy usually concludes with the child birth. Usually the pregnancy period is 40 weeks. This can vary from 38 to 42 weeks. During this period usually the natural delivery of the child occurs. Natural labour (the delivering process) involves the main components; passenger (the foetus/baby) passage (mothers birth canal) and the power (from uterine muscle contraction and abdominal muscle contractions). In normal vaginal delivery, the pain starts, the neck of the uterus (cervix) dilates, the membranes which covered the baby tears and slowly the baby will be ex pulsed from the uterus through the vagina.

Normally the baby’s head comes first in Normal vaginal delivery. Usually delivering the head is an important event as this is the largest part in the baby. Following the head, the shoulder and the body of the baby will be delivered. The delivery will be completed when the placenta and the membranes delivered completely. Then the uterus contracts and the bleeding will be stopped.

Labour stages can be divided in to three. The first stage is from the onset of the labour to full dilatation of cervix. The second stage is from the full dilatation to delivery of the baby. The third stage is from the delivery of the baby to delivery of the placenta and the membranes.

When mother faces difficulty in pushing the baby out, the instruments may help the mother to deliver the baby. Forceps is an instrument used to deliver the baby’s head. The forceps has two pieces. It covers and holds the baby’s head and from the forceps handle the doctor will pull the baby’s head. This kind of assisted vaginal delivery called forceps delivery. In this method, if it is done correctly the baby will be safer than mother. Mother may get injuries due to the instrumentation.

Some instances the head will be delivered by a vacuum application. A negative pressure will be applied in the head and the cup will be pulled by the doctor. This will give some pulling force to deliver the baby. If the resistance of the head is higher than the vacuum pressure the cup will come out, so that injuries to the head will be minimized. However the vacuum delivery is safer to the mother but may cause some injuries to baby.

Forceps delivery and vacuum delivery are called assisted vaginal delivery. The delivery occurred through the vagina with the pulling force of the instruments. This will help to reduce the mother’s exertion. Exertion may cause harm to the mother with cardiac diseases. Instrumental, assisted vaginal delivery helps the mothers a lot.
