Notice vs Notification

Notice and Notification are two words that are often considered as words that denote the same meaning. Actually, they are not so. There is some difference between the two words. The word ‘notice’ is used in the sense of ‘observe’ or ‘warning’. On the other hand, the word ‘notification’ is used in the sense of ‘announcement’. This is the main difference between the two words.

It is interesting to note that the word ‘notice’ is used both as a noun and as a verb. When it is used as a verb, it gives the meaning of ‘observe’. On the other hand, if it is used as a noun, then it gives the meaning of ‘warning’. This is an important observation to make when it comes to the meanings of the word ‘notice’.

On the other hand, the word ‘notification’ is primarily used as a noun as in the sentences,

1. The principal read out a notification.

2. A notification was received by the department.

In both the sentences, the word ‘notification’ is used in the sense of ‘announcement’, and hence, the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘The principal read out an announcement’, and the meaning of the second sentence would be ‘an announcement was received by the department’.

Take a look at the following sentences.

1. Francis noticed a big change in the behavior of the girl.

2. A notice was served to each of the residents.

In the first sentence, the word ‘notice’ is used as a verb and in the sense of ‘observe’, and in the second sentence the word ‘notice’ is used as a noun and in the sense of ‘warning’. As a matter of fact the usage ‘notify’ is also commonly heard. These are the important differences between the two words, namely, notice and notification.
