Orange vs Mandarin
Orange is one citrus fruit in the world that is loved by the people in all parts of globe. It is both eaten raw as well as in the form of its juice. In many cultures, orange is used to make many types of recipes and desserts. However, it is not top be assumed that orange is a monolithic fruit founded in one variety only. There are scores of varieties found in different parts of the world and mandarin is one form that is popular in South East China and some other countries. The western world knows mainly about oranges as they are grown there and do not have much knowledge about mandarins. There are some similarities between these two fruits, though there are also differences that will be talked about in this article.
Mandarin orange, though just one variety of orange found in South East China, is in itself a big family with many different types of oranges such as tangerines, Satsuma, Clementine, Tangor, and Owari included in mandarin oranges. Mandarin fruit can be easily peeled with pressing with thumb on the depression at the top as the fruit breaks evenly into many segments. This is why it is easier to eat with no requirement to keep bowls or plates near you when eating mandarin oranges. Mandarin is also available as canned, where the white pith is removed before canning that can turn the fruit bitter. Mandarin oranges are considered as symbol of abundance and are a lucky mascot. These oranges are frequently given to friends and relatives as gifts as they are considered to bring good fortune.
Orange on the other hand, is also known as sweet orange and is a citrus fruit grown in tropical and subtropical climates. The bionomical name of orange is citrus sinensis, whereas mandarin has a bionomical name of citrus reticulata. Oranges are loved in US and Brazil with people eating them raw and also consuming them in juice form.
Mandarin oranges are being cultivated in China for the last 3000 years, but they were earlier considered fit for consumption of nobles only. Because high public officials wore orange robes in ancient China and the color of the skin of mandarin oranges is orange, the fruit was reserved for the nobility and this explains the name of the fruit also. The fruit reached US and the western world in general in the 19th century only.
What is the difference between Orange and Mandarin?

• Mandarins have a flatter taste than oranges.
