Ordinary vs Extraordinary
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is paper thin as the results of athletes winning the gold medal and the runner up are anything to go by. Ordinary and extraordinary are descriptive terms. It is that little extra that makes all the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. People are impressed by the success stories of extraordinary people and want to emulate them. Each story, depending upon the walk of life the person belongs to has different features, but all of them have the same underlying theme, which is the strong desire to be the best among the competition. It is up to you what you want to be in life. You can be successful and extraordinary, or you can choose to be mediocre and lie in the heap of ordinary people. It is the top one percent of the population that belongs to this extraordinary group, and believe me, they are not people with extraordinary brains or talents, they are people who are determined to give that little extra in whatever they attempt in life. The winner in a boxing bout is not one who has more power or can deliver the killer punch, it is one who can stand in the ring for that extra second.
More about Ordinary and Extraordinary…
What are the words that describe a person who is ordinary? Average, so-so, mediocre, nothing to write home about and so on, isn’t it? What are the words that describe an extraordinary person? They are awesome, brilliant, genius, and some more praising adjectives. If you look at the two words, the only difference between ordinary and extraordinary is extra. If you take out extra from extraordinary, what you get is ordinary. Hence, it is not difficult to fathom the real difference between being outstanding and a mediocre person. Extraordinary people are willing to put in that much extra which ordinary people do not care about. Let us understand the difference by taking an example.
There are two companies using the same technology and making the same product selling it under different brand names. Why then one is so popular and the other one making mediocre sales only? This is because of that little bit extra that one company does in marketing the product, which the other company lacks. Sometimes, the only difference lies in the punch lines being used by the two companies in their commercials. One that appeals more to people is obviously the one that would sell more.
Let us take the example of two small business owners. One goes out of the way and listens to the grievances of his customers and tries to solve their problems, sometimes bending the rules of the company. The other owner goes by rule books and solves problems almost mechanically. Whom would you think customers would prefer? Both have same knowledge and expertise and are running their businesses in much the same way, but one who is more responsive to the needs, aspirations, fears and concerns of his customers would obviously be more successful and likely to become extraordinary while his competitor is doomed to remain ordinary.
The one major difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the way these people think. Extraordinary people know what they want from their lives and plan their approach accordingly making concerted efforts to achieve what they have in their minds. Ordinary people, on the other hand, keep worrying about obstacles and the effect circumstances have over their lives. I can bet that if you keep thinking about success and do something to achieve it, you are bound to be there sooner or later though you may experience the same obstacles as ordinary men do. Success begins with thoughts, and if you have self-belief that you can do it, you eventually will succeed.
Another major difference between ordinary and extraordinary is, of course, the level of commitment shown. Extraordinary people are 100% committed to their dreams and are willing to do whatever it takes to realize their dreams. Ordinary people , on the other hand, just talk about their dreams and never take action to accomplish it. It is all about taking action instead of just talking about it all the time.
The tagline of Nike, Just Do It, sums up the difference between ordinary people and extraordinary people beautifully in just three words.
