Paddy vs Rice

Paddy becomes rice after the removal of husk by threshing. Therefore, rice is a part of paddy. There are similarities as well as differences between rice and paddy. This article intends to discuss the similarities, as well as, the differences between rice and paddy.

Paddy

Paddy is the rice grain with husk. The term paddy was derived from Malay word with the meaning of “rice in the straw or husk”. Generally, rice plant also is called paddy. This is a crop which belongs to the family Graminae. Botanical name of the paddy is Oryza sativa. It is a wetland crop, which extensively grows all over the worlds. Paddy is the main crop in the majority of the Asian countries including India, Pakistan, Philippine etc. Paddy is cultivated at paddy fields. Paddy cultivation started from the beginning of human civilization. The wet land paddy cultivation originated in China, but field cultivation of paddy started in Korea. Cultivation practices of paddy has a cultural value in most of the communities. There are novel techniques such as SRI method (practice in the African region) applied in paddy cultivation.

Rice

Rice is the seed of paddy. It is a staple food of the majority of the world population. It is the second major crop in the world. The International Rice Research Institute is located at Philippine. Rice is an annual crop, but there are some perennial wild rice varieties. Rice grow in different environments including lowland irrigated rice cultivation, low land rain fed rice cultivation, Upland rice cultivation etc… There are four major categories of rice. They are indica, japonica, glutinous, and aromatic. Glutinous rice is common in Japan. It is a short grain variety. Most of the aromatic cultivars are long grain rice. Due to the high demand for rice, novel techniques and methods are used in paddy cultivation. The development of high yielding rice varieties, production of hybrid rice, and genetic engineering (production of golden rice) are taking importance in rice production. It is said that, 40% of the daily protein requirement of the majority of the third world population is taken from rice.

What is the difference between Paddy and Rice?

• Paddy becomes rice after the removal of husk. Therefore, paddy is the rice with husk.

• Field where paddy is cultivated is called paddy field. Also, rice plant too is known as paddy.

• Botanical name of the common paddy is Oryza sativa. Rice is an annual crop, but there are some wild rice varieties that are perennial crops. There are several other wild cultivars such as Oryza nivara.

• There is a cultural value for paddy; because it is being cultivated from the of the human civilization.

• Novel techniques are used in paddy cultivation such as SRI method. Some of the novel techniques incorporate genetic engineering, hybrid production, and production of high yielding rice varieties.

• Rice is a staple food of the majority of the world population. It is the second major crop in the world. Around 40% of the protein requirement of the third world population is taken from rice.

• There are four major varieties of rice. They are indica, japonica, glutinous and aromatic cultivars.
