Parakeets vs Lorikeets

Parakeets and lorikeets are actually cousins. They are a certain species of parrots, yet they have very significant differences between them. These differences are not exactly pronounced, but they definitely separate one from another. So what are parakeets? And what are lorikeets?

Parakeets

Parakeets is a term for a group of parrots that are generally small or medium sized and have long tail feathers and a slender body. To be frank, any small parrot that has a slender body and a long tail can be called a parakeet. In fact, there are many kinds like the Budgerigar, ringnecked parakeets, Monk parakeets and Lineolated parakeets, among others.

Lorikeets

Lorikeets are also parrots that are small to medium in size but are characterized by their brush tongues. They are also famous for their bright plumage. They are usually found in Australia, Polynesia, New Guinea and Timor Leste. They feed on nectar, which is made possible by their unique tongues. Some lorikeet species are actually endangered now, like the Ultramarine lorikeet and the Blue lorikeet.

Difference between Parakeets and Lorikeets

So how they are different? Well, parakeets’ diet is composed of seeds while lorikeets feed on nectar and pollen. However, parakeet is actually a very broad term. A lorikeet can be considered as a parakeet by virtue of its size and the length of its tail feathers. However, some parakeets are not lorikeets because of the tongue. Also, for those aspiring pet owners, lorikeets are more expensive and need specialized care compared to parakeets; thereby making them not an ideal pet for beginners. Lorikeets are also more fun to be with compared to parakeets because of their clownish behavior; however they are messier to clean after.

Lorikeets and parakeets are indeed beautiful birds and are great for pets, although the former will need more care than the latter. Nevertheless, they are fun and colorful companions.

In brief:

• Parakeets are any kind of parrot that are small to medium in size and have a slender body and long tail feathers. They are mainly seed-eaters.

• Lorikeets are also a species of parrots that are small to medium in size. They are as colorful as parakeets however what separates them from another is that they have this brush tongue that they use to eat nectar and honey, their main diet.
