Pullover and sweater are two upper garments that are made from knitted fabric. The key difference between pullover and sweater is the way they are worn. Pullovers are put on or taken off over the head since they don’t have an opening. Some sweaters have front openings, so they don’t have to be pulled over the head.

What is a Pullover?

A pullover is a knitted garment that is worn over the upper body. They are a type of sweaters and have no opening. They are designed to be pulled over the head instead of buttoning or zipping. The name pullover comes from the way they are worn. The term pullover is commonly used in British English.

Pullovers are made from wool, cotton, synthetic fibers or their combinations are used to make pullovers. A pullover without sleeves is known as a slipover.

What is a Sweater?

Sweater is a knitted garment that covers the torso and arms. Sweaters are always made from knitted fabrics, made of wool or synthetic fabrics. Sweaters come in various designs. There are various necklines, waistlines, sleeve lengths and knitting patterns. They are worn by adults and children alike.  Sweaters are usually worn over another cloth such as a T-shirt or blouse. They can be also worn alone.

Sweaters can be pullovers or cardigans. Cardigans are sweaters with an opening at the front. They are typically buttoned or zipped or kept open. The main difference between cardigans and pullovers is the way they are worn. Pullovers are designed to be put on or taken over the head whereas cardigans can be unbuttoned or unzipped.

Sweaters are usually worn with trousers or skirts and are kept untucked. Sports sweaters are often worn over sports kits. Some people also wear sweaters over dress shirts and ties since they can remove the sweater if it becomes uncomfortably warm.

The term sweater is commonly used in American English. In British English, sweater is known as a jersey or jumper.

Pullover is a type of a sweater. Sweater is either a pullover or a cardigan.
Opening
Pullovers don’t have an opening at the front. Some sweaters have an opening at the front.
Wearing 
Pullovers are put on or taken off over the head. Some sweaters don’t have an opening at the front.
Occasion
Pullovers may be inconvenient to put and or take off. Sweaters, typically cardigans, are not difficult to wear.
Usage
The term pullover is mainly used in British English. The term sweater is mainly used in American English.
