Religion is developed and propounded by great religious leaders. When we look at the world today, there are many religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, etc. All these religions cater towards a single need of constructing a system of beliefs and guiding people. Karl Marx once said that religion is the opium of the masses. Through this statement Marx elaborate son the idea that the function of religion is to ease the pain in life. Others such as Talcott Parson and Emilie Durkheim believe that religion build social solidarity and collective conscience and even social control among the people. I don’t think the purpose or aims of mythology was to prove the theology of religion. Mythology organically developed through storytelling, thousands of years before any type of organized religion. In fact you should consider the fact that relgion developed to prove the concepts first delineated in mythology , such as the virgin birth , immortality and the salvation of the soul.
Kenneth Corbiere says
Mythology is what supports religion…stories handed down of great feats by individuals which have no proof…Jesus, Mohomid,Ishtar, Zeus, and so many other gods that have no proofs of existing other than in the minds of men… perhaps it is time for a new religion based in reality and fact that has artifacts and history…and perhaps a inclusive doctrine written for humanity rather than exclusive groups

There really isn’t a difference between either, other than those that want to legitimize religion as a fact not faith based, as it should be. Both rely on some facts in history, story telling, and unrealistic controlling powers applied to real situations over history that can’t be explained, and using beings that don’t exist to try and make some sense out of it. Superstitions is there basis or need for existence.
Cindee Dickens says
Mythology has NOTHING to do with religion! And ” new religion based in reality and fact that has artifacts and history” really? Reality? The Bible is reality? I don’t think so. Religion is just a way to control the masses through fear and guilt. The Goddess of the moon and the earth is not scary! They are welcoming and loving.
