Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G vs LG Connect 4G | Speed, Performance and Features Reviewed | Full Specs Compared

As we’ve been talking going on about, CES 2012 has been a brilliant show so far letting the industry leading smartphone manufacturers to unveil their newest products to the market. They are all fascinating new devices with some cutting-edge functionality incorporated in order to excel in their respective market. The two handsets under discussion right now were unveiled at the CES, as well. Both devices are equally good in caliber and from two arch rivals in the business.

Samsung is the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world while LG stays close behind. So, if we are to hear that both of these companies released two products that are alike and are addressed to the same niche market, we look at competition with heavy artillery. The battles of such kinds are absolutely enjoyable to watch and imperative to evolve the mobile phone market in to new dimensions. As it can be seen from the name, both of these handsets are 4G enabled, which has been a usual aspect for most of the handsets released in CES. Let us look past that and identify what defines these handsets as interesting.

Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G

Designed for MetroPCS communications Incorporation, Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G, is a mid-range performance device with high bandwidth connectivity. The press release by MetroPCS has been released today (09 Jan 2012), and it indicates that GalaxyAttain would be available for $199 for a limited time, and consumers can make the purchase at the local MetroPCS. MetroPCS has introduced the Galaxy Attain 4G with some attractive additional benefits like their unlimited usage plan starting from $50 per month and with their $60 per month plan, the consumer gets access to Rhapsody unlimited music or MetroStudio that takes care of your entertainment needs. To start with, these are online music achieves and video libraries that included videos on demand for latest TV shows, movies and entertainment videos.

Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G comes with 1GHz processor, which makes it fall in the mid-range of performance, and we are hoping for 1GB of RAM. The handset runs on Android v2.3 Gingerbread, and there is no indication about an upgrade to v4.0 IceCreamSandwich. It utilizes MetroPCS’s fast LTE 700 network infrastructure to satisfy the consumers’ browsing needs, but we do have some doubts about its ability to multi task with the prevailing processor. Samsung has included 3MP rear camera for Attain 4G, and we find this disappointing in a Galaxy range mobile phone. A 3MP camera is not exactly the benchmark for current handheld devices, and it would have been so much better if they did include a better camera. The 1.3MP front camera is integral in video conferencing bundled together with Bluetooth v2.1 and A2DP.

The Galaxy Attain 4G comes with 3.5 inches TFT Capacitive touchscreen, which does serve the purpose, although not the best panel Samsung can offer. It will have the usual aspects on an Android system and decent internal storage capacity with the option to expand using a microSD card. About the battery usage of Galaxy Attain, we can deduce it to have a talk time of 7-8 hours with the provided battery.

LG Connect 4G

As we’ve mentioned in the introduction, LG Connect 4G is also focused on MetroPCS’s niche 4G market competing with Samsung. Announced at the same time, LG Connect 4G would be available on MetroPCS stores from February 2012 onwards giving some competitive advantage for Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G to penetrate the market. MetroPCS has been generous enough to bundle their packages with the same benefits as for Samsung Galaxy Attain with on demand access for their music and video repositories. The exact pricing scheme the device would be available to buy hasn’t been released yet.

LG Connect comes with 1.2GHz dual core processor and runs on Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread. We are assuming it would come with 1GB RAM and decent internal storage options with the ability to expand the storage using microSD card. We also suspect LG would be cautious enough to grant an IceCreamSandwich upgrade to this handset because it jolly well can handle it. MetroPCS promises seamless browsing on top of their high speed LTE 700 infrastructure, and we tend to agree with their statement for this performance set up would yield the device to effortlessly multi task. It has 4.0 inches NOVA display patented to LG that is sleek and modern looking, and we expect the resolution of the handset to be somewhere near HD.

LG promises 720p HD video capturing with their 5MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash. The front camera is ideal to be used in video conferences along with Bluetooth v2.1 and A2DP. The handset is said to deliver highly responsive user experience with the developed UI from LG. The Dolby Mobile feature is a nice addition from LG that enhances the quality of sound in Connect 4G.

Conclusion

The effect on releasing both of these handsets at the same time would have been different to that of now, since Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G is going to get some competitive edge with the earlier release. Comparing these phones, what we see is that MetroPCS’s interest has been to make their 4G infrastructure available to mid-range investors porting the LTE connectivity for handsets with trimmed prices. Samsung has definitely complied with MetroPCS’s requirement, to come up with Attain 4G for $199. Samsung has done this by trimming down performance in exchange for price, for instance, the processor and the camera. We would like to analyze this trend in two ways; it is good that MetroPCS is trying to make their LTE network popular, and address at general smartphone market. It would definitely cause a boom in data usage and the already mobile life style of the consumers. Everybody will benefit from it in various ways, given MetroPCS would develop the infrastructure at the same rate the boom would spread, as well. On the other hand, when the performance of mobile devices is cut down, it comes with a certain implication. For instance, Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G might qualify for an upgrade of IceCreamSandwich, but it’s highly unlikely due to the performance gap. So it comes down to a bargain of price over upgrades. On the other hand, LG Connect 4G has not cut down much performance, and we reckon it would be available for a higher price than Attain 4G. In terms of hardware, we can ideally say LG Connect 4G excel compared to Attain 4G. When it comes to investment decision, I would personally go along with Samsung Attain 4G because it’s a splendid bargain for the price.
