When we talk about mobile devices, the general understanding is that we talk about mobile phones, and the recent addition to it is Tablet PCs. Although laptops are mobile devices, they are more of a mobile computing platforms providing fully fledged performance of a workstation. However, this distinction is slowly narrowing down for a variety of reasons. For instance, laptops have been becoming more and more tablet like with the introduction of highly touch centric OSs like Windows 8. The other side of the equation is also filling the gaps. The mobile phones and Tablets are increasingly becoming like laptops and even in a scale to replace them. This is both in terms of performance and screen size as well as the ability to dock. Sometimes, mobile devices like Samsung Note are really hard to put in either of those categories because it has the characteristics of all three. What we are going to talk about is more or less the same kind by the same vendor; Samsung. Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G Is closer to the laptops in terms of processing power. Been a member of the glorious Galaxy family, Blaze 4G has a name to keep and with the initial overview, we are positive that it is ready to assume the responsibility of the reputation.

As the opponent gets ready like that, Nokia has also been working towards bringing a new product. After they have abandoned their proprietary Symbian OS, they have readily embraced Windows Mobile and that has been a rewarding experience for them so far. The Lumia 710 comes with the new Windows Mobile 7.5 Mango release and one of the premier Windows Mobile phones. Yes, we’ll answer the usual ‘will Windows Mobile can take over Android?’ question in the review to come. Let us look at the micro details before we approach their macro characteristics.

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

When you are part of a family, keeping the reputation of the family becomes one of the major concerns. If you don’t oblige, bad image would not only be bestown upon you, but the whole family. So when Samsung uses the name Galaxy to one of their mobile devices, they carefully analyze it before releasing. This is the base of loyalty customers have for them. Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G doesn’t fail to keep it. It has 4.52 inches Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen featuring 800 x 480 pixels at 206ppi pixel density. The panel is of superior quality even though they could have upgraded the resolution and pixel density. The color reproduction would be great, but the crispness of images and texts would be somewhat lower. It has the generic Samsung TouchWiz UI and has some improvements done to it. It is said to use T-Mobile’s 42Mbps 4G infrastructure to deliver blazing fast internet while featuring Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity. Blaze 4G can also act as a Wi-Fi hotspot to share internet with friends and can stream rich media content wirelessly to smart devices around.

All these hunger for multimedia and blazing fast internet is seamlessly managed by 1.5GHz dual core Scorpion processor on top of Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 chipset. It also has Adreno 220 GPU and 1GB of RAM for smooth performance. It will come in Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread with an upgrade to Android OS v4.0 IceCreamSandwich sometime later. Given the upgrade will be available; which we don’t doubt although there’s no official indication; we have no doubt the OS would manage the resources at disposal efficiently. Galaxy S Blaze 4G is not only a smart and fast phone, but it’s good on optics too. Having an 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash, it can capture 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. It also has 2MP front camera for the purpose of video conferencing bundled together with Bluetooth v2.1. It comes in two storage capacities; 16 GB and 32 GB with the option to expand the memory using microSD card. Unfortunately, we don’t have information about the dimensions of the handset nor the battery life, so we won’t be able to comment on that context.

Nokia Lumia 710

Nokia has actually performed a leap of faith by embracing the newest Windows Mobile 7.5 Mango OS for their handsets. Lumia was released last month, and it seems consumers are excited to get their hands on this beauty. Thus, we can safely say Nokia has benefitted from their leap of faith. It looks small for a smartphone but is considerably thicker than the modern smartphones. Lumia 710 has a 3.7 inches TFT Capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of 252ppi. It also entertains from Nokia’s generic touches such as, Nokia ClearBlack display, multi touch input, proximity sensor and accelerometer.

Lumia 710 comes with a 1.4GHz Scorpion processor and Adreno 205 GPU on top of Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. It has hardware accelerated 3D graphics engine, as well. The 512MB RAM seems to be just sufficient, but we’d have liked it to be 1GB for smooth performance. The internal storage is at fix capacity of 8GB and not expandable which is a significant fallback. The much awaited Windows Mobile 7.5 Mango runs on top of this set of hardware. Lumia 710 has a 5MP camera with autofocus, LED flash and Geo-tagging with A-GPS support. It can also record 720p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. As usual, Nokia is to release this handset in a variety of colors including Black, White, Cyan, Fuchsia and Yellow. Because of its fine build, the handset feels good in hand and carries an expensive look. Lumia 710 also enjoys fast internet browsing with HSDPA 14.4Mbps support and continuous connectivity with the built in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n.

The active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, Digital Compass, MicroSIM card support and Windows Office support are significant improvements compared to a conventional Nokia handset. And of course, it looks more and more smartphone like by the day. Lumia 710 has a 1300mAh battery which features a talk time of 6 hours and 50mins.

Conclusion

We’ve come to the end of the comparison with a definite conclusion. But before that, we have to discuss the question whether Windows Mobile overrides Android. The easiest answer as per growth rates is NO. At least, it won’t be possible with the current growth rate for the 5 years to come, but then, if the growth rate changes, there may be drastic changes. The main problem we see is that the applications for Windows Mobile are not that popular nor are they strong in numbers, so even if they have a market of their own, choice of programs are rather limited compared to Apple and Android. The constant low rates of growth were a result of bad UI experience in the earlier versions of Windows Mobile where the desktop version was directly applied. The new version, Mango seems to be a complete redesign and might lead Windows Mobile to the top of the stack. Let’s wait hopefully and analyze the growth rates to determine that in time to come. So until that, the answer to the question would be NO. It partially solidifies our conclusion as well which is that Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G is better than Nokia Lumia 710. Justifying that deduction is simple. Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G has a better processor with dual cores, a better memory (in terms of RAM and internal storage), a better camera, a better screen panel and better network connectivity. What more could you ask for to notice the handset is obviously better than the other. But the issues we see would be with the price. Although we don’t know the price it’d be released by T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G will be released for a moderately steep price.
