Science vs Applied Science
We often come across terms like science and applied science that are enough to confuse those who have studied streams like arts and commerce. Is science and applied science two different subjects? Are they same and closely related? There are many similarities between the two and even the tools used by these branches are similar, almost identical. Let us take a closer look and find out the differences between science and applied science.
Science
Science is a Latin word meaning knowledge, and indeed it is a collection of our knowledge that has resulted from close observation, rational explanation, and logical thinking. It is a body of our knowledge that started with our curiosity to explain natural process in life such as lightening and thunder, earthquakes, volcanoes, and so on. In fact, science is a way of life, all those branches of study that seek to enhance our knowledge about the universe and materials. Science takes upon itself to enrich us about laws of nature through pioneering works of scientists like Newton, Einstein, Galileo and Kepler. In due course of time, science, because of its objectivity and insistence upon proof grew apart from humanities and philosophy.
Applied Science
When the basic principles of science are used to create an object of use, the study of such process is termed as applied science. We all know about the properties of physical substances as to how they react with other substances and what happens when they are made to react with each other. When this knowledge is used to create new substances that are useful for us humans like some alloys (steel and bronze) and new medicines that aim to cure certain ailments, scientists are said to be making use of applied science. We all know that airplanes have been there for over a century now, but with one look at super sonic airplanes of today, it becomes clear that applied research has transformed these airplanes to be so fast and efficient as they are today. The same thing applies to all new gadgets and their designing that is more user friendly, also the products themselves are advanced and more efficient than before.
What is the difference between Science and Applied Science? • Applied science draws upon pure science and is actually based upon the principles of pure science. • Applied science is using the knowledge gained from the principles of science, to make products better, faster, and more efficient for the use of human beings. • Applied science is not limited to gadgets and products making them more effective than before but also to create new substances that are beneficial to human beings. • It is through applied science that scientists are able to create new drugs and medications to fight diseases and ailments.
