Sculpture vs Architecture

Sculpture and Architecture are two terms that are often confused in terms of their meanings and connotations. Actually, both are different in their meanings. A sculpture is a three-dimensional work of art. Architecture on the other hand, is the designing and the construction of buildings. This is the main difference between sculpture and architecture.

Sculpture involves the carving of wood, stone or any other metal with artistic creativity. It is a fine art. On the other hand, architecture involves aesthetic appeal. Sculpture involves creative appeal. It is interesting to note that both sculpture and architecture appeal to the human mind.

Palaces, churches, castles, cathedrals, hotels and office buildings are architectural creations. It is indeed encouraging to know that several architectural landmarks or wonders stand even today. They include cathedrals designed by famous architects, castles and palaces too.

On the other hand, pieces of sculpture find place in museums and art galleries. They are often fit to be exhibited in group shows or one-man shows of the artist who has created them. Buildings laden with architectural beauty cannot be displayed in exhibitions.

Sculpture is made from a single piece of stone or wood or any other material for that matter. Several materials, such as stone, wood, glass, brass, steel and other metals are used in the construction of a building. In short, it can be said that several metals are used in architecture whereas, only one substance is used in the making of a sculpture. This is a very important difference between the two words, namely, sculpture and architecture.

Architecture involves the study of engineering and engineering mathematics.  Sculpture involves creativity and imagination. It does not depend on measurement. On the other hand, architecture solely depends on measurement.

Strength of materials plays a very important role in the construction of buildings.  Texture of soil and quality of building materials used are all tested before taking up an architectural project. On the other hand, sculpture is measured by the imaginative power of the sculptor.

A building of architectural importance or beauty gains in value based upon the area in which it is built, increase in the real estate value of the place and such other factors. On the other hand, the value of the sculpture depends upon the greatness of the sculptor, its artistic representation and the message it delivers. It is indeed true that every piece of sculpture delivers some message or the other.
