Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc vs Apple iPhone 4 – Full Specs Compared
There is no doubt that there were many contenders in 2010 that tried to push Apple’s iPhone 4 from the top position that it has acquired ever since its launch. However, no one came even close to making a dent in the popularity of iPhone 4. Things seem to have undergone a change with the launch of Sony Ericsson’s latest offering named Xperia Arc at CES 2011. This new smartphone does away with Sony’s fondness for phones that were thick in the middle like human curvature. Xperia is loaded with features and is today one of the slimmest smartphones in the market. Let us see how it fares when pitted against an all time favorite that is iPhone 4.
Xperia Arc
The first thing that one notices when he sees this amazing new smartphone from Sony Ericsson is its thinness. At just 8.7mm, this is today the slimmest smartphone available in the market. Another big attraction is its large 4.2” display which is considerably larger than many of the other smartphones. But these two features are just the beginning as the phone is equipped with some more stunning features. Finally Sony has presented to the world its first Android based smartphone that operates on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Coupled with a powerful 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon Scorpion processor and 512 MB RAM, this smartphone makes multitasking, browsing and watching HD movies a smooth and pleasing experience.
The display makes use of LED-backlit LCD technology at a resolution of 480X854 pixels that is bright and the colors are vivid to say the least. It has multi touch capacity with a highly capacitive touch screen. The only downside is its internal memory which stands at 320 MB. However it can be expanded using micro SD cards up to 32 GB. The phone is equipped with an 8 MP camera that takes images in stunning clarity courtesy Sony’s legendary Cyber Shot technology. It has auto focus, LED flash, image stabilization, geo tagging, face and smile detection and it captures HD videos in 720p.
For connectivity, it is Wi-Fi 802.1 b/g/n with Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and makes browsing blazing fast. As it supports Adobe Flash, even rich sites full of graphics and images open in a flash. The phone is HDMI capable, allowing the user to watch HD videos captured from its phone instantly on TV. Yes, the phone has FM which is surprisingly missing from many smartphones.
Apple iPhone 4
iPhone 4 is undoubtedly one of the most successful launches by Apple, and has caught the imagination of people all over the world. It is one smartphone that is popular in all parts of the world and is more of a status symbol than merely being a mobile phone. It is one smartphone that takes a minimalist approach when it comes to designing. With minimum of buttons and controls, it is a very good looking phone. Apple has done away with a curved back and the phone is just 9.3 mm thick. It has a glass and stainless steel sleek industrial design that lures people towards itself. It has dimensions of 115.2X58.6X9.3mm and weighs just 137 gm. However, it is a fully loaded phone when it comes to internals with hardware and software.
Let us begin with the display. The screen is 3.5 inches in size which is smaller in comparison to some of the bigger smartphones, the touch sensitive LCD display using IPS technology makes display very bright and clear at 960X640 pixels; so much so, that it can be read easily even in broad daylight.
The phone runs on the latest Apple iOS and an equally powerful Apple A4 processor (1GHz). It has a RAM of 512 MB that does not support multitasking.
iPhone is a dual camera device with a 5 MP camera at the rear and a front VGA camera (640X480) that allows user to video chat. For connectivity, it is Wi-Fi802.1b/g/n with Bluetooth 2.1 A2DP. However, it does not support Adobe Flash.
The smartphone is available in two versions with internal memory of 16 GB and 32 GB though there is no provision to expand it further. One thing that disappoints is that iPhone 4 is not HDMI capable and also does not have FM. The phone makes up for these drawbacks with apps from Apple’s apps store from where thousands of apps can be downloaded.
