Fame is a circle, what was once your fame might turn out to be your shame the next day. That’s the wheel of life resulting from the evolving circumstances. It is always better to be prepared to accept both fame and shame, and try to mitigate the shame if not to avoid it altogether. In the context of mobile phone market, the fame and shame are two elements sides of the same coin. It’s true that we see walls of fame most of the times, but that’s because walls of shames are not that spread or known. What is the relation of walls of fame and shame in what we are going to talk about? Well we are going to get a handset from Sony’s wall of fame and a handset from Motorola’s wall of fame. Sony Xperia Ion is one of the first phones to be released under the Sony name after much-reputed Sony fully acquired Ericsson and removed the suffix from their brand name. That is definitely the reason for Xperia Ion to be in their wall of fame. So why Motorola Atrix 2 does comes to Motorola’s wall of fame? Well, for starters, it used to be a high-end device when it was released, but more than that, it was released to cover the footsteps of Motorola Atrix, which Motorola apparently considers to be in their wall of shame. Thus, we automatically categorized it into the wall of fame and selected to be compared against Xperia Ion.

One of these devices is quite old, with a history of three months, and the other one was just released in CSE 2012. Although Atrix 2 is old, it still has the vibes that once lifted it up to the top. AT&T was rather fond about Motorola Atrix 2 back then and offered it with a generous package. Sony Xperia Ion also got the same kind of attention from AT&T when it was introduced at the developer summit with a generous package. We will have to examine them individually to understand the stance of AT&T on both of these handsets.

Sony Xperia Ion

Xperia Ion is a smartphone that is intended to succeed against all odds, for it is of too much value to Sony. Been the first of Ericsson-less smartphones, it has the ardent responsibility of carrying Sony’s flag high and been the first LTE smartphone, the responsibility of impressing the reviewers about LTE connectivity is entrusted upon it, as well. Let us see how well Ion handles this pressure by looking at what it’s got.

Xperia Ion comes with 1.5GHz Scorpion processor on top of Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and Adreno 220 GPU. It has 1GB of RAM and runs on Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread. We expect Sony to come up with an upgrade to IceCreamSandwich soon, as well. Ion is also reinforced with the super-fast LTE connectivity of AT&T that delivers unbelievable browsing speeds at all times. The beauty of the system can be seen by the macro level, when you are multi-tasking and switching between many applications and network connections. The performance of the processor can be seen with the seamless transitions from one to another which speaks for itself. Ion comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity, and Sony has enabled it to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and share the super-fast internet, while DLNA functionality ensures that the user can wirelessly stream rich media content to a smart TV.

Xperia Ion has 4.55 inches LED backlit LCD Capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors, and featuring a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at a pixel density of 323ppi. It also boasts superior image clarity with the Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine. Interestingly, it recognizes multi touch gestures from up to 4 fingers, which would give us some new gestures to practice. Sony has also made sure that Xperia Ion excels in optics. The 12MP camera with autofocus and LED flash is a state of the art; an unbeatable. It can also record 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second, and the 1.3MP front camera can be used for video conferences. The camera has some advanced features like geo tagging, 3D sweep panorama, and image stabilization. It comes with accelerometer, proximity sensor and gyro meter and this fancy handset come in flavors of Black and White. The 1900mAh battery promises a talk time of 12 hours, which certainly is impressive.

Motorola Atrix 2

Motorola Atrix 2 comes as a main competitor and, the attraction is that, it is also offered at a low price tag. The screen size is almost similar to that of Xperia Ion been of 4.3inches Super AMOLED Plus Capacitive touchscreen, but Atrix 2 produces a somewhat lower resolution of 540 x 960 pixels with a 256ppi pixel density, which still enables it to display crisp and sharp images. It has a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor with TI OMAP 4430 chipset which is disadvantageous compared to Xperia Ion. The performance boost is achieved with a 1GB RAM, and Atrix 2 comes with 8GB internal storage that can be expanded up to 32GB. It comfortably enjoys fast internet browsing with latest 4G infrastructure of AT&T with HTML5 and flash support in the built in Android browser. We can deduce that Atrix 2 will yield a good user experience with seamless multi-tasking even with the high-speed network connectivity. The Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity ensures that the Atrix can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots, and it also can serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot that enables you to share your connection with friends. The built in DLNA features means that Atrix 2 can wirelessly stream rich media content to smart TVs in your vicinity. 

Atrix 2 comes with 8MP camera that can record HD videos in 1080p @ 24 frames per second and with the A-GPS support, Geo-tagging is also enabled. It has dimensions of 126 x 66 x 10mm while not been the thinnest phone on the market, it still feels good in the hand and it’s built convinces the phone to be high end and expensive. It is somewhat bulky scoring a weight of 147g, but nothing one can’t afford to hold in their hand. It also comes with Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic and 1080p HD video playback but what makes it different is the HDMI port in Atrix 2. Having a 1785mAh battery, Atrix 2 promises a talk time of 8.9hrs which is really good.

Conclusion

The differences between these two handsets are too apparent to a naked eye. To start with, Ion comes with a better processor and with a promise of an upgrade to a better operating system. It has a better screen, both the panel and the resolution with a high pixel density that ensures crisp and clear images and texts down to the smallest detail. Sony BRAVIA engine does an awesome job in color reproduction and it also has a better still camera although both can capture 1080p HD videos @ 30fps. Xperia Ion also has LTE connectivity while Motorola Atrix 2 only promises limited 4G connectivity. Even in terms of battery life, Sony Xperia Ion seems to be the winner. So is Motorola Atrix 2 a total loser? Not at all, for Atrix 2 was released almost three months back and you and I both know how things can evolve in the mobile market within three months. Atrix 2 used to be a majestic handset back then and it still serves the purpose and the incentive to invest in Atrix 2 is that it comes with comparably lower price tag while Sony Xperia Ion is bound to be premium priced. Oh and you will have to wait some more time to get your hands on Sony Xperia Ion, so if you’re in a hurry, Ion might not be your ideal choice.
