Sudan and Southern Sudan till very recently were one country. While Sudan and Southern Sudan may be unfamiliar names to most, these are two countries one must be made aware of, especially if one is eager to learn more about world politics and the like.

What is Sudan?

Found at the northeast part of Africa, Sudan is known as the largest country in the continent. Sudan boasts of a very long history – the Sudanese people had to undergo two civil wars, of which the first persisted for 17 years from 1955 to 1972. The second war was in the year 1983, which was due to economic, religious and ethnic differences in the country. The second war ended in the year 2005 when the Sudanese government made an agreement with the Southern rebels and adapted to a new political system and agreed to an independence referendum.

What is South Sudan?

South Sudanese people share a different view from that of the government of Sudan because of which they fought their way to stand on their own in order to be called an independent country. Southern Sudan achieved their mission when in 2005, both parties agreed to end the civil war under the condition that Sudan will change their constitution and will have an independence referendum this year.

What is the difference between Sudan and South Sudan?

The situation pertaining to these two countries is not the first in world history. Sudan and South Sudan were once one country. Since Sudan had suffered a great deal with internal conflicts with the people from the south of Sudan which led to years of war, it was opined that it might help each entity to separate their governments. Hence, they separated into two countries; Sudan and South Sudan. South Sudan was declared an independent country in 2011. Sudan has been a part of the United Nations since 1956 and South Sudan became the 193rd member of the organization in 2011.
