To provide protection to ourselves in winters, we have developed all sorts of garments. As far as our torso and arms are concerned, there are sweaters and sweatshirts that are unisex, and are worn by men and women of all ages in all seasons except summers. Sweaters are older of the two while sweatshirts relatively newer and more casual of the two. Both come in many different styles, sizes, and colors, but a factor that is common in these two garments is their ability to provide protection to our skin during winters. Both keep us warm and different people have different preferences when it comes to choosing between these two garments. This article intends to highlight the differences between sweater and sweatshirt.

Sweater

If you are a kid, you probably relate to garments that are more stylish, and wear other garments like jackets and sweat shirts to provide warmth to you during winters. But if you are a senior, you very well know what a sweater is. It is a garment for the upper body and arms that is worn over a T-shirt or a shirt, blouse or a top. Sweaters are always knitted and made from wool obtained from sheep or rabbit. These days there are sweaters made from acrylic material or even cotton but the real purpose of a sweater is to keep the user warm in chilly conditions. Sweater in earlier times were mostly V-necked, but later they evolved into many different shapes such as round neck, collared, and even zipped ones. Sweater was, and still considered a formal wear with people preferring to wear them in work places. There is a division between front open sweaters called cardigans and pullovers, which are closed in front and are either round neck or V-neck. Today we also have sleeveless sweaters.

Sweatshirt

Sweatshirt is a garment that is made from cotton hosiery material from outside and has a fleece like material inside to keep the body of the user warm during winters. It covers the upper body as well as arms of users and worn by men and women of all ages. It is available in the market in all shapes and styles with companies making sports apparels manufacturing these sweatshirts. These sweatshirts have another quality of absorbing sweat from the body during exercise or sport which is why most athletes and players seen wearing these sweatshirts. Sweatshirts can be round neck, zipped with a collar, or front open with a hood that remains on the back casually though it is to be worn over the head when it is raining or snowing.

 

What is the difference between Sweater and Sweatshirt?

• Sweater is in use since ancient times while sweatshirt arrived much later.

• Sweater is considered more formal while sweatshirt is sporty and worn casually.

• Sweatshirt serves the purpose of both providing warmth as well as absorbing sweat while a sweater is meant just to provide warmth.

• While earlier sweatshirt was not front open, it is now available with a zipper just like a sweater.

• Sweatshirts are known for their hoods while sweaters are mostly V neck and are worn over a shirt or a blouse.
