Difference Between Therapist and Psychologist

There are many professions that are satisfying for the practitioners as they get a feeling of satisfaction helping to improve the quality of life of their clients. The vocations of therapist and psychologist are similar in this sense as both are professionals who try to solve mental roadblocks of their patients to make their lives cheerful and happier. At a general level, both a therapist and a psychologist are mental health experts who talk to people in a bid to solve their mental problems. Despite overlapping, there are subtle differences between a therapist and a psychologist that will be talked about in this article.

Therapist

A therapist is a general term that includes many different types of mental health workers. He is a professional who provides counseling to his clients who are in a mental strife and want to come over the problem. A social worker, clinical psychologist, or even a counselor may be referred to as a therapist. Therapists have generally completed their Master’s degree in clinical psychology and then proceeded to get training in counseling such as in child, marriage or family therapy. He can have degrees in any other field also, and some therapists have had no formal degree in psychology. A therapist’s primary task is to help clarify clouded feelings that prevent people from taking a decision. He also provides guidance and support to patients so that they can cope with their lives in a better manner.

Psychologist

As the name implies, a psychologist has studied psychology and holds a master’s degree in psychology. It is up to a psychologist to get involved with research or therapy. He is the right person to be asked to diagnose problems in kids and adults. He does clinical testing and suggests appropriate treatment method. A psychologist not only diagnoses and treats mental disorders; he also provides support and guidance to his patients, to let them make decisions. Psychologists can begin private practice and start counseling or providing therapy to clients to help solve their mental problems. However, they can choose to do research in academic settings and even continue to teach budding psychologists. . It is a path breaking research conducted by psychologists that throws light on new aspects of human behavior and guides others in the same profession to discover new treatment methods.

 

What is the difference between Therapist and Psychologist?

• A psychologist is always a person having a Mater’s degree in psychology while a therapist can be a psychologist but also come from other backgrounds.

• A psychologist can perform the role of a therapist, but he can also choose to research and teach in an academic setting

• A therapist provides therapy and manages the case of a mental patient, but he does not get involved with testing and prescription of drugs.
