Truvia and Splenda are sweeteners that can substitute the normal sugar that we use in our dishes. These are both sold in small packets as granulized substances. Truvia and Splenda are non-caloric sugar substitutes and have been distributed commercially to help ward off weight gain.
Truvia
Truvia is a substitute for sugar that was developed and recently distributed by the company Cargill. So far, its popularity has increased in households in the US because of its zero calorie content and natural way of processing. It is derived from the sweet leaf plant also known as stevia. Sadly enough, it has been banned in the UK and other countries where stringent policies on GMO products exist.
Splenda
Splenda is an artificial sweetener made from sucralose, which is found to be 600 times sweeter than table sugar. It contains glucose and maltodextrin as a base. It was discovered and is being distributed by the company Tate & Lyle. It’s being widely used as a food ingredient because of its sweet taste and the lower caloric content as compared with sugar. Splenda also does not affect your blood sugar level.
What is the difference between Truvia and Splenda?
Truvia is made from the stevia plant so it’s a natural sweetener. On the other hand, Splenda is a synthetic product that’s based on sucralose. While Truvia may get its sweet taste from the leaves of the stevia plant, Splenda is still the sweeter alternative to sugar. In fact, a lot of consumers prefer the taste of Splenda over Truvia, which has a distinctive aftertaste that tends to upset the consumers. But the negative side of Splenda is the numerous health-damaging effects that it brings about, like liver swelling and increase in insulin levels. Truvia seems to have lesser negative side-effects, most of which are allergy-related.
