Bartholin cysts are formed due to a blockage in the opening on one of these glands, causing the fluid to lump up. With marsupialization, the Bartholin cyst is cut into a small slit, allowing the fluid to drain. It is then followed by a suture at the edges of the cysts to the surrounding tissue to form a small pouch. The pouch allows the fluid to drain freely from the Bartholin cyst.
Marsupialization is recommended if the Bartholin cyst is very painful and uncomfortable or if there is a history of returning a Bartholin gland cyst after treatment. The surgical procedure takes place in an operating room and lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes. It is carried out under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.
