Grunge is an American slang that means ‘something or someone dirty or distasteful’. This word was used first to define murky-guitar bands that arose in the 1980s in Seattle as a link between punk rock and heavy metal hard rock. It also influenced Indie rock bands that originated in 1970 with independent record labels.
Grunge usually uses bass guitar, electric guitar, drums and vocals. Therefore, it is a mixture of guitars with loud drums. Grunge mainly focuses on themes like neglect, betrayal, abuse, social alienation, emotional isolation, self-doubt, anger, desire for freedom, and psychological trauma. Early grunge is a combination of Seattle’s underground music and the independent record label Sub Pop. The owners named this ‘grunge’. This mixture of punk and metal gained wide popularity in the 1990s and spread to the other areas of the United States as well as Australia. Some of their releases became very popular. With this popularity, even clothes with grunge themes came into existence. Although grunge gradually declined in its popularity during the late 1990s, it influenced modern pop culture and post-grunge.

Punk is an aggressive variety of rock music that was created in the mid-1970s in the United Kingdom. This followed a DIY method and rejected the mainstream 1970s rock. Musicians created their own recordings and published them as independent record albums. Punk music was fast-paced, loud and short with a few lyrics. It also has hard-edged singing styles, melodies and stripped-down musical instruments. Its themes opposed the prevailing political, social and economic principles. The word ‘punk’ was first used in the 1970s in garage bands. Glam rock in the UK and The New York Dolls from New York became the main influencers of punk music. Punk became popular in 1974-1976, and their main acts included,
- Television, Patti Smith, and the Ramones in New York City
- The Saints in Brisbane
- The Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Damned in London
- Buzzcocks in Manchester
Punk was very much popular in 1976 in the United Kingdom, and the punk subculture led to unique clothing styles among the youth. Some of these fashions include offensive T-shirts, leather jackets, spiked bands, jewellery, and bondage and S&M clothes.
