What is Hyoscine Hydrobromide?

Hyoscine hydrobromide or scopolamine is a natural or synthetic tropane alkaloid and an anticholinergic drug that is important as a medication in treating motion sickness and postoperative nausea and vomiting. It is also known as hyoscine or Devil’s Breath.

Sometimes, this drug is useful prior to surgery for decreasing saliva. Moreover, it can be used as an injection, and its effects tend to begin in 20 minutes and can last up to 8 hours. Furthermore, we can use this medication orally and also as a transdermal patch.

There are some common side effects related to hyoscine hydrobromide, such as sleepiness, blurred vision, dilated pupils, and dry mouth. Moreover, this medication is not suitable for patients having angle-closure glaucoma or bowel obstruction. It is unclear whether it’s safe for use during pregnancy.

Metabolism of Hyoscine hydrobromide occurs in the liver. Its elimination half-life is about 4.5 hours. The excretion of this medication occurs in the kidney. The chemical formula of Hyoscine hydrobromide C17H21NO4.

Among the number of uses of Hyoscine hydrobromide in medicine, the most important uses include postoperative nausea and vomiting, motion sickness, gastrointestinal spasms, renal or biliary spasms, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.

Hyoscine Butylbromide is an anticholinergic medication useful in treating crampy abdominal pain, esophageal spasms, renal colic, and bladder spasms. This organic compound is also known as scopolamine butylbromide. Moreover, Hyoscine Butylbromide is useful in improving respiratory secretions at the end of life. We can take this medication orally or as an injection into muscle or vein.

The most common side effects of this medication are sleepiness, vision changes, dry mouth, rapid heart rate, etc. Moreover, it is unclear whether it’s safe for use during pregnancy.
