What is Mylanta?

Mylanta is a medication useful in treating the symptoms of excessive stomach acid, including stomach upset, heartburn, and acid indigestion. Typically, Mylanta works only on existing acid in the stomach. Therefore, it cannot prevent acid production. We can use Mylanta alone or with other medications that can lower acid production.

Mylanta is a capsule that is taken orally after meals and at bedtime if required. There is a chewable tablet form available as well. It is advised to chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing, followed by drinking a glass of water. Moreover, Mylanta can come in liquid form as well, and we need to shake the bottle before drinking prior to pouring each dose.

The common side effects of Mylanta include nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and headache. The persistence of these symptoms can become severe, so it is advised to inform a doctor. However, most people who are using this medication do not show serious side effects.

What is Pepto Bismol?

Pepto Bismol is the trade name of Bismuth subsalicylate, which is a medication useful in treating occasional upset stomach, heartburn, and nausea. We can also use this medication to treat diarrhea and prevent travelers’ diarrhea. The mode of action of Pepto Bismol includes the help in slowing down the growth of bacteria that can cause diarrhea. However, we should not use this medication for self-treatment of diarrhea if we have fever or blood in the stool as well. This is because it can cause serious health conditions.

The route of administration of Pepto Bismol is oral. The most common form is the chewable tablet form. We need to chew each tablet well and swallow it. Moreover, there is a liquid form; we need to shake the bottle well before using it. Furthermore, Pepto Bismol can interact with other medications such as tetracycline antibiotics and chloroquine.

The side effects of Pepto Bismol are rare. However, there can be darkening of stool or tongue, vomiting, dehydration, unusual decreased urination, dizziness, thirst, fast heartbeat, unusually dry mouth, etc.
