The key difference between regeneration and reproduction is that regeneration is the process of replacing the damaged or missing cells, tissues, organs and even entire body parts in organisms, while reproduction is the process of producing new offspring from parents sexually or asexually in organisms.

Regeneration and reproduction are two processes that help organisms in growth and multiplication. These processes can take place in organisms through asexual and sexual mechanisms.  The mechanism involved in regeneration is totally asexual. On the other hand, the mechanism involved in reproduction can be either sexual or asexual.   However, regeneration and reproduction are extremely important processes for the overall fitness and survival of an organism.

What is Regeneration?

Regeneration is the process of replacing damaged or missing cells, tissues, organs, and even entire body parts in plants and animals. It is a natural process. Scientists study regeneration for its potential uses in medicine, such as treating different injuries. They also use regeneration in order to understand the normal aging of humans. This advanced field of medicine is called regenerative medicine. All living organisms have some ability to regenerate in order to maintain their tissues and organs. Regeneration is controlled by genes at the molecular level. It involves cellular processes such as cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and morphogenesis. Regeneration is fundamentally regulated by asexual cellular processes.

Natural regeneration of vegetation is a complicated ecological process. It plays a pivotal role in the multiplication, spreading, and continuation of the plant population. Plants can also be regenerated in in vitro cell cultures under defined physical and chemical conditions. Meanwhile, when it comes to animals, some animals have extensive regenerative abilities. For example, a freshwater hydra can form two whole bodies after being cut in half.  Moreover, Mexican salamander can form almost any limb, organ, or other body part. But more complex animals like mammals have limited abilities such as forming thick scars in tissues and skin to heal injuries, regrowing hair and skin, healing bone fractures, etc.  Furthermore, stem cells play a very critical role in regeneration as they can develop into many different cell types in the body.

What is Reproduction?

Reproduction is the process of producing new offspring from parents by sexual or asexual methods in organisms.  This is also a natural process. It is a fundamental feature of all living beings. Organisms exist because of reproduction. There are two mechanisms involved in reproduction: sexual or asexual.

Sexual reproduction occurs when a sperm of a male parent fertilizes an egg from the female parent. Sexual reproduction produces offspring genetically different from both parents. Some examples are humans, sea turtles, bryophytes, etc. Asexual reproduction is a form of reproduction where offspring comes from a single organism and not from the union of gametes. It forms genetically identical offspring. Some of the species that can reproduce asexually are bacteria, hydra, yeast, volvox (green algae), etc. Some organisms follow both forms of reproduction, such as brittle star.
