Difference Between 7Up and Sprite

7Up vs Sprite

7Up and Sprite are two of the leading brands when it comes to clear sodas. Owned by soft drink giants PepsiCo and Coca-Cola respectively, these two brands of transparent sodas have many similarities in taste but also have many differences. Majority of the consumers cannot tell the difference between 7Up and Sprite if they were to be served the drinks in clear glasses instead of their bottles, but then there are some who would tell one from the other even blindfolded. Just what are the differences between the two clear sodas and how do they fare against each other?

For starters, both 7Up and Sprite taste just the same. It is difficult to tell the difference especially if you are a kid but, when you ask the same question to an adult who has developed taste buds, he will tell you that Sprite has more of a lime taste while 7UP has more fizz and less of lime flavor. Sprite also seems to have a sugary taste. It is difficult to say whether it actually has more sugar or it tastes so because of lesser acids.  On the other hand, 7UP is a little bitter and fizzier, which suggests it is stronger of the two while Sprite is a little bland.

If you leave the cans of both the brands open for about 10 minutes, both 7UP and Sprite lie flat but, even in this state, 7UP tastes better than Sprite which is suggestive of higher carbonated content than Sprite. Thus Sprite goes down easily and quickly than 7UP, which tastes a little bitter and harder to gulp in large quantities.

For those who do not know, 7UP is a non caffeinated drink with a lime flavor that has been marketed by Dr Pepper Group in the US, while in the rest of the world it is marketed by PepsiCo. Sprite is also a non caffeinated soft drink with a lime flavor that has been developed by Coca-Cola as a competitor of 7Up and has slowly emerged as the most popular clear soda brand in the world.

As far as ingredients are concerned, here is a comparison of the two clear sodas.

Sprite: carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, natural flavors, citric acid, sodium citrate and sodium benzoate to preserve taste.

7UP: carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, natural flavors, citric acid, natural potassium citrate.

Thus, it is clear that the only big difference between 7UP and Sprite as far as ingredients are concerned is potassium and sodium. While Sprite relies on sodium salt, 7UP makes use of potassium salt. If we were to compare nutritional facts of 7UP and Sprite, there are absolutely no differences suggesting that both are almost similar.
