Difference Between Android and MeeGo

Android vs MeeGo

Android and MeeGo both are open source Linux based operating systems for Smartphones, Tablets and Pads. Android was an initiative of Android and taken over by Google and MeeGo is an initiative by Intel and Nokia. MeeGo has not been released to commercial market yet.

MeeGo

MeeGo is a Linux based operating system that could run on mobile handsets, netbooks, tablets , connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment system.

Moblin was an open source project carried out by world largest chip manufacturer Intel and Maemo was also an open source project carried out by Nokia. In 2010 February Intel and Nokia merged their open source project together and formed MeeGo Project.

Primary reason for merging Intel’s Moblin and Nokia Maemo is to unify the efforts of both projects and communities and enable a next generation open source platform for smartphones, tablets and other capable devices.

MeeGo Architecture – MeeGo provides a full open source software stack from core operating system up to user interface libraries and tools. Further it offers user experience reference implementations and allows proprietary add-ons to be added by vendors to support hardware, services, or customized user experiences.

Android

Android is an open source operating system for smart phones and tablets initially developed by Android and the Internet giant Google took over in 2005. Android is developed on Linux kernel. Android has several versions and the latest version as today is Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Android is fairly matured and introduced to commercial market long time back.

Most Manufactures like Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC and Huawei have already released handset for Android in 3G and 3G market. Android has a application market with more than 200,000 applications to run on Android devices.

Difference Between MeeGo and Android

(1) MeeGo and Android both are open sourced Linux based smart phone operating system.

(2) Android project is currently carried out by Google and MeeGo is carried out by Intel and Nokia as a joint venture.

(3) Android already have a huge application market having more than 200,000 applications whereas in MeeGo is currently under development. But some of the Nokia OVI apps and Intel AppUp will run on MeeGo.

(4) Android already captured considerable mobile market and MeeGo is still under development and not released for commercial use.
