Apologies vs Apologize

Apologies and Apologize are two words that have to be understood with difference. The word ‘apologies’ is the plural form of the word ‘apology’ as in the expression ‘my apologies to you’. On the other hand the word ‘apologize’ is used as a verb as in the sentence ‘I apologize for the bad remarks I made on the panel’. This is the basic difference between the two words ‘apologies’ and ‘apologize’.

One of the main differences between the two words is that the word ‘apologies’ is used as noun whereas the word ‘apologize’ is used as verb. It is interesting to know about a few grammatical peculiarities as far as the usage of the two words ‘apologies’ and ‘apologize’ is concerned.

As a matter of fact the word ‘apologies’ is often followed by the preposition ‘to’ and is sometimes used with the genitive form of a noun or pronoun such as ‘his’ or ‘her’ as in the sentences

1. He conveyed his apologies yesterday.

2. He expressed his apologies to the Chairman.

In the first sentence you can see that the word ‘apologies’ is used along with the genitive form of the pronoun ‘he’. In the second sentence you can see that the word ‘apologies’ is followed by the preposition ‘to’.

It is interesting to note that the word ‘apologize’ is often followed by the preposition ‘to’ as in the sentence ‘she apologized to me in the morning’. Here in this sentence you can find that the word ‘apologize’ is followed by the preposition ‘to’. The noun form of the verb ‘apologize’ is ‘apology’. Hence it should be understood that both the words are derived from the base word ‘apology’. These are the differences between the two words, namely, apology and apologize and these differences should be observed carefully.
