Difference Between Area and Place

Area vs Place

Area and Place are two words that appear to be similar when it comes to their meanings but they are not so. There is indeed some difference between the two words.

The word ‘area’ conveys the sense of ‘space’ on a surface or a region or locality. On the other hand the word ‘place’ conveys the sense of ‘spot’, a particular portion of space. This is the main difference between the two words, namely, area and place. Observe the two sentences:

1. The play ground has a large area.

2. The total area of the land is 1700 square feet.

In both the sentences the word ‘area’ conveys the sense of ‘space’ and hence the meanings of the sentences would be ‘the play ground has a large space to play’ and ‘the total space of the land is about 1700 sq.ft.

Observe the two sentences:

1. It is a cool place.

2. The places of interests will be visited by me.

In both the sentences the word ‘place’ conveys the sense of ‘spot’ and hence the meanings of the sentences would be ‘it is a cool spot’ and ‘the spots of interests will be visited by me.’

It is interesting to note that both the words, namely, place and area are used as nouns. As a matter of fact the word ‘area’ is often followed by the preposition ‘of’ as in the expression ‘area of’. On the other hand the word ‘place’ is used in the formation of various phrases and idiomatic expressions such as ‘out of place’, ‘in the place of’ and the like.

It is important to know that the word ‘place’ can be used as a verb also as in the sentence ‘place the book on the table’. In this sentence the word ‘place’ is used as a verb. These are the differences between the two words, namely, place and area.
