Award vs Reward
Award and Reward are two words that are often confused due to the assumed similarity in their meanings, but one should remember that there is a difference between award and reward. Due to the assumed similarity both these words are often interchanged. In fact, they, award and reward, are very much different from each other. As words, both award and reward are used as both nouns and verbs. The word reward has its origins in Middle English. The word award has its origins in Late Middle English. An example for a phrase that uses the word reward would be go to one’s reward.
What does Award mean?
Award is normally given to a person as a token of recognition of his achievements in a particular field of science or arts. In short, it can be said that an award is given to honor a person that has achieved a status in a field. Moreover, an award is given in the form of a shield, a trophy, title, badge, medals or sometimes cash. At the same time, you will be awarded a prize or a medal for your contribution to the field of music. In this case you will not be suitably rewarded. On the contrary to a reward, an award is not given for helping others in completing their tasks but is given to promote a field of art or science.
What does Reward mean?
On the other hand, a reward though given in honor of the contribution made by a person to a particular field, it is given as a kind of encouragement to the person. In other words, a reward is given to acknowledge a person’s contribution to a particular field. Unlike an award, a reward is not given in the form of a memento but is given as money. Rewards are given to someone who has helped any department in providing valid information about something that is useful to the department. For example, you will be rewarded for providing valid information about a person who is construed missing by the family of the person or any other organization. Rewards are given as a kind of compensation for you if you assist somebody in completing a tough task.
