Blackberry QNX is an operating system originally from a Canadian Company (30 years old) called QNX Software Systems. RIM recently bought (April 2010 for 200 Million) QNX with its employees. Basically QNX Software Systems created the operating system called QNX and after acquisition of QNX Software Systems RIM started using it in Blackberry devices. First device with QNX operating system is Blackberry Playbook.

Blackberry OS

Blackberry OS is a mobile operating system developed by RIM (Research in Motion) for Blackberry Smartphones. This is Proprietary software developed in C++. Blackberry OS supports multitasking. Third party developers can write application software for blackberry OS by using Blackberry API (Application Programming Interface). It has several versions, Blackberry OS 4, Blackberry OS 5 and the latest version is Blackberry OS 6.

So far all Blackberry devices run on Blackberry OS and at the moment only Blackberry Tablet runs on QNX. It was a strategic move from Blackberry to compete Apple and Android Markets.

Blackberry QNX (QNX Neutrino RTOS) Operating System

The original QNX was developed by QNX Software Systems decades ago that is largely invisible but a marvel of tightly written code. It was used to run factory assembly lines, nuclear power statiBons monitoring systems, car entertainment consoles and CISCO routers.

RIM started releasing application tools based on simpler mainstream technologies like Adobe Air, Flash and HTML5. Blackberry Tablet OS QNX SDK for adobe air allows developers to create rich and powerful application never like before.

At the same time Blackberry released WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS QNX to create applications based on web technologies such as Java, HTML5 and CSS.

Developer support is crucial in any operating systems. Apple store has more than 350,000 applications and Android Market has more than 100,000 applications whereas Blackberry only has 20,000 apps. But those Blackberry apps will not be compatible with new Blackberry QNX operating system without tweaks.

Even though Blackberry QNX is at the moment for Playbook and Tablets, it will be released soon with smartphones as well.

Features of QNX:

(1) Reliable high performance multi core hardware enabled.

(2) Multi-threaded POSIX OS (Portable Operating System for Unix) for true multitasking

(3) Built from the ground up to run WebKit and Adobe Flash

(4) Built with the security, efficiency and seamless connectivity from the ground up you’d expect from RIM
