Bute is the trade name or common name for phenylbutazone. It is an NSAID medication that is useful in the short term treatment of pain and fever in animals. Moreover, this drug is not approved for human use in the USA and UK. This is because this drug can cause severe effects, including the suppression of white blood cell production and aplastic anemia. The chemical formula for this drug is C19H20N2O2, while the molar mass is 308.38 g/mol.

When considering the uses and applications of Bute, some countries use it in human treatments. This drug was originally produced for human use in treating rheumatoid arthritis and gout in 1949. However, this drug also has major application in horses, for several purposes, including the treatment of analgesia and antipyresis. Furthermore, Bute is important in treating dogs for long term management of chronic pain such as osteoarthritis.

However, there are some side effects of this drug as well. These side effects are usually similar to those in other NSAIDs. For example, the overdose of Bute can cause gastrointestinal ulcers, blood dyscrasia, kidney damage, etc., specifically, if this drug is given for young, ill or stressed horses. These horses are less able to metabolize the drug.

When considering the chemical structure of Bute, it is a crystalline substance we can make from the condensation of diethyl n-butylmalonate along with hydrabenzene. This production occurs in the presence of a base.

What is Banamine?

Banamine is the commercial name for flunixin meglumine, an NSAID medication. This drug has its major applications in three major animal species: they are beef cattle, dairy cattle and horses. It is commercially available mostly as an injection, but we can get it as a paste, powder or in tablet form as well. The area of application for this medication is veterinary.

We can name this drug substance as a potent, non-narcotic, nonsteroidal, and analgesic agent having anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity. Typically, this drug is potent than pentazocine, meperidine, and codeine.

The most common side effects of Banamine drug include localized swelling, sweating, induration and stiffness. We can rarely observe fatal or nonfatal clostridial infections or other infections in horses that are associated with intramuscular use of flunixin meglumine.
