Difference Between Care and Pity

Care vs Pity

Care and pity are feelings one person can feel towards another person, or even a thing or animal. These two are normally felt in times when the other party is hurt, or if something bad happens to the other party. There is a big difference between care and pity though.

Care

Care is one feeling that every person in the world need and should share. Not only people need this, but also everything around us. How do you care? Take this for example: one of your friends had a problem, if you care for that friend, you will surely get out of your way, see what the problem was and help that friend solve the problem.

Pity

Pity on the other hand, has a snobbish and judgmental touch to it. The person who shows pity to the other, acknowledges the misfortune the other has gone through but would not do anything to ease the other’s pain. For example: this person saw a kid on the street, dirty and asking for food. This person may feel sad for the kid, but would not do anything to help him.

Difference between Care and Pity

Care and pity actually differ in a number of ways. To care would mean that you love the person you are caring for; while pity would only show your acknowledgment of the other’s misfortune. To care would mean you will help the other person with his or her problem; on the other hand to pity would make you not want to be a part of the problem’s solution. The person who feels pity would look down to the person with the problem; but the caring one would never do that.

Care and pity are words we should not use interchangeably, they are different from each other. It is important that we know that a person would want our care and never our pity.

Summary:

• Care involves the urge to help the other person’s problems while pity is just like acknowledging the person’s misfortune.

• Care is loving; on the other hand pity is judgmental and snobbish.
