Crepe and pancake are food items that bring a sparkle in the eyes of the people as they are not just tasty but also easy to prepare. There are many who feel they are one and the same as the ingredients that make up the batter are indeed the same in the case of crepe as well as pancake. However, there are differences in preparation that can be seen in the differences, in the appearance of the two food items. This article attempts to find out if indeed there are differences between crepe and pancake or crepe just a regional variation of pancake that is a term used in most countries of the world.

Crepe

Crepes are very thin pancake like food items originating from France. These are generally treated as snacks that can be consumed at all times in a day and importantly, they can be prepared with great ease. They can be sweet or filled with meat or cheese as per the taste of the person. There are some who like to eat crepes plain. Crepes are made with the wheat flour, and in Brittany, a region of northwestern France where they originated, they are served along with cider, an alcoholic beverage. There are many variations of crepes as it is today loved by people in many parts of the world. The main ingredients of crepes are wheat flour, milk, and eggs though there can be many different items used as filling. These include cheese, eggs, ham, mushrooms, and many different meats.

Pancake

Pancakes are quick breads made on hot frying pans with a batter made from wheat flour using a leavening agent to make the bread fluffy. The leavening agent may be yeast or baking soda. The bread is cooked on the griddle from one side though it may be flipped and cooked from the other side too. Pancake is very common in all parts of the world with many different types of fillings and toppings used to eat this bread. There are lots of variations of pancakes with nearly every country having something like a pancake as a snack or food item. In India, there are many variations of this pancake such as Cheeela, Dosa, Uttapam, Pooda etc. that are made from different ingredients with south Indian variations making use of rice flour, black gram flour, and coconut milk. Pancake popular in Indonesia is known as Serabi and is made with rice flour. In UK, pancakes are made with flour, milk, and eggs. Pancakes are also called flapjacks and hotcakes.

What is the difference between Crepe and Pancake?

• While pancake is a food item made from wheat flour and leavening agent such as yeast or baking powder, crepe is a delicious food item that is more popular in France and Quebec regions and is made with a batter that has the same ingredients as the batter for pancake.

• Pancakes are thicker than crepes.

• The batter of crepes is thinner than the batter of pancakes as it contains more milk.

• Leavening agent is used to make pancake while there is no leavening agent in the batter of crepes.
