Most of us do not actually know the difference between Delhi and New Delhi. Strictly speaking both are not same. New Delhi is part of the large city of Delhi. New Delhi is the capital of India.

You can say that New Delhi is akin to territories such as Canberra in Australia and Washington DC in America. It is also an independent territory from the states surrounding it.

One of the main differences between Delhi and New Delhi is that Delhi is the second largest metropolis in India. New Delhi on the other hand is a territory in Delhi and has about 350,000 residents. The territory of New Delhi was designed by a British architect in the early part of the 20th century. Delhi on the other hand has a population of about 22.2 million.

It is interesting to note that the urban area of Delhi includes areas such as Noida, Gurgoan, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. Delhi is situated on the banks of the river Yamuna. The capital city of the Pandavas in the epic of the Mahabharata, Indraprastha, is believed to be in Delhi of the present times.

Delhi occupies a total area of about 573 square miles. New Delhi was built to the south of Delhi and was declared the capital of the country when the country attained independence in 1947. Delhi is characterized by the humid subtropical climate. Both Delhi and New Delhi are extremely hot during long summers and extremely cold during winters.

You would find nice government buildings in New Delhi. The landmark buildings in New Delhi are the Rashtrapati Bhavan – the official residence of the President of India, the Parliament House and the Secretariat Building, The southern part of New Delhi is home to all the embassies and federal government headquarters. New Delhi has many star class hotels; it looks absolutely clean and neat with lush green lawns here and there. Delhi on the other hand is home to old monuments, tombs and architecture built during the period of the Mughals. These old monuments include the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Lotus Temple, Humayun Tomb and the like. The famous India Gate, Connaught Place Jantar Mantar, Lodhi Gardens and Akshardham Temple are located in New Delhi.
