Duke and Prince are persons who have particular ranks in a monarchy. Monarchs have several titles and the most common of them are that of a Duke and Prince.

Duke

This title came from the Latin word, ‘Dux,’ leader. This word was utilized in Republican Rome , in referring to a commander in the military that has no official rank. In the nineteenth century, smaller Italian and German territories were ruled by Grand Dukes or simply called dukes. This title has the highest rank in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

Prince

It is an English term, which is derived from the French expression (prince). The Latin noun, Princeps, is a combination of two words, primus and capio. If you combined the two it will mean as “chief, ruler, most distinguished or prince.” Prince is a universal term for ruler. A prince is basically a leader of a particular territory which can be a quasi- sovereign or sovereign.

Difference between Duke and Prince

In United Kingdom, a Prince is an offspring from the King and Queen consort, Queen Regnant and consort or prince and princess, they are of noble blood. While a duke is the highest ranked official with a non-royal title. A duke can get its title by doing something noble in the name of the royal family. The dukedom title is given by the current monarch. Dukes can receive income-generating lands because of their loyalty to the monarch. As for the prince, he has supremacy over the lands that are under the monarchy. Dukedom is passed down to the first born son. A prince can be a duke but a duke can never be a prince.
