Flickr vs Picasa

Flickr and Picasa are two most used photo sharing and image hosting website in the internet community today. Those people who are into mobile blogging are surely using either of this two image hosting sites especially when uploading bulk pictures from their adventure trips.

Flickr

Flickr was originally created by Ludicorp and was bought by Yahoo later on. This image hosting and sharing website has been the official image hosting application for mobile devices such as Blackberry and iPhone. You can also find different high resolution images in Flickr which were uploaded by professional photographers. A whopping 5 billion images have been hosted by Flickr in a recent survey conducted last September 2010.

Picasa

Picasa is bought by Google from its original creator, Idealab. It has many ways of uploading your photos. You can go to their website and upload your photos after creating an account or you can download the free Picasa program and install it to your computer. You can then download your photos into your desktop computers for easy sorting of images and then later on publishes it to their server.

Difference between Flickr and Picasa

In terms of uploading your photos online, both of these image hosting sites have an uploader in their websites. Picasa has a software which does not only made it faster to upload your photos but it also have basic image editing tools like crop, rotate, and resize. Compared to Picasa, Flickr uploader is very basic wherein you could only upload photos to their server and that’s it. On the other hand, free users of Picasa can only have 1GB storage size while in Flickr there is no storage limit but only a 100MB monthly upload limit.

It’s up to you as to what image hosting website are you going to use. If you’re an aspiring photographer, it’s best if you use Flickr since a number of their users are photographers and they could help you improve with their comments in your photos. But if your purpose is more of personal sharing of photos, then the 1GB storage size of Picasa would be enough already.

• Picasa has a 1GB storage size while in Flickr there is no storage size limit but only an upload limit of 100MB monthly
