Geomorphology vs Geology
Geomorphology and Geology are two words that do not differ much in their concepts, but there is a subtle difference between the two. In other words, it can be said that geology includes geomorphologic studies too. It can be said that geomorphology is a subset of geology.
Geomorphology is the study of the physical features of the Earth’s crust as related to its geological features. Morphology means outer study. It deals just with the study of the earth’s outer surface or the crust. On the other hand, geology is a branch of science that deals with all the physical features of earth including the minerals that are found in the earth and their characteristics. This is the main difference between geomorphology and geology.
Geomorphology deals with the contours and the outer study of mountains and the cross sections of rocks and other substances and forms related to the crust of the planet earth. On the other hand, geology deals with the study of the matter that makes up rocks, mountains, various types of soil and the like.
Geology deals with the study of physical properties of the planet earth. On the other hand, geomorphology deals with the study of the morphological properties of the crust of the earth. It deals with the shapes of the constituents that make up earth’s crust. It studies the difference between the cross sections of rivers and creeks. It studies the difference between the cross sections of mountains and hillocks.
Geomorphology deals with the study of highest and the lowest points of certain geographical areas too. For example, it deals with the highest and the lowest points of a plateau, highest and the lowest points of a mountain range, highest and the lowest points of a volcano, and the like.
