Difference Between Grammar and Punctuation

Grammar vs Punctuation

Grammar is set of rules that govern the use of words and make up of sentences in a particular language. In fact, grammar is the cornerstone of a language as it allows a person to express himself in that language in a correct manner. There is another term punctuation that confuses students learning English. This is because of overlap between the two. However, there are differences that will be highlighted in this article.

Grammar

The system of a language is called grammar. It is the set of rules that govern sounds, words, sentences, punctuation, syntax, morphology etc. Study of grammar is necessary for those trying to master a language that is not their native language. Grammar makes it possible for a person to express himself in a particular language correctly. The rules of grammar make it possible for a person to communicate with another person in a language as it would be total chaos without the grammar. Grammar makes standardization in a language that allows people to understand and communicate efficiently.

Punctuation

Imagine reading a text that did not contain any commas and full stops. You cannot make out anything reading such text as it does not contain punctuation marks. Punctuation marks in a written text make it structured and organized and of course readable. Punctuation refers to the use of period, comma, colon, semi colon, question mark, exclamation mark, etc. that help in structuring and organizing the text. You know where to give pauses and where to emphasize thus letting others know the real meaning of a text when reading out aloud.
