Here vs There in English Grammar

Here and There are two words in the English language that are used as adjectives in addition to the fact that they are indeclinable in nature.

The word ‘here’ is used to point out the location of something as in the sentence “The book is here”. Here the word ‘here’ points out the location of the book. In the same way the word ‘there’ also can be used to point out the location of something as in the sentence “He lives there”, here the word ‘there’ points out the residing place of the person.

If you closely observe the two sentences given above then you would notice that the word ‘here’ is used to locate something which is near, on the other hand the word ‘there’ is used to locate something which is far. In the examples given above you can understand that the book was near whereas the residing place of the person was far.

In other words it can be said that the word ‘here’ is used to indicate something that is within the range of one’s vision, whereas the word ‘there’ on the other hand is used to indicate something that is out of the range of one’s vision. This is the main difference between the two words ‘here’ and ‘there’.

It is also interesting to note that both the words are used in affirmative sentences as well as in

1. You may live here.

2. He should go there tonight.

In both the sentences mentioned above the words ‘here’ and ‘there’ are used in the affirmative sense. ‘Here’ and ‘there’ are used as nouns too as in the expression ‘here and there’. It is interesting to note that the words ‘here’ and ‘there’ are used as adverbs differently as in the sentences “He comes here” and “The dog goes there”.

Here is used to locate something which is near, within the range of one’s vision.

There is used to locate something which is far, out of the range of one’s vision.

Here and There are used in affirmative sentences as well.

Here and there are also used as nouns in sentences.

Here and there are used differently in the sentences as adverbs.
