Difference Between Huawei Ascend P1, P1 S and Motorola Razr

Sometimes it’s rather confusing when there are a lot of variations of the same smartphone, and it becomes all the more ambiguous when they are all from the same manufacturer. Motorola has recently released a set of smartphones that are virtually similar to each other yet, with a subtle difference. The best examples are Motorola Razr, Motorola Droid Razr and Motorola Droid Razr Maxx. All of these models are variations of the same base model, Motorola Razr, and they are built on by adding some additional features. For instance, Motorola Razr is actually the global version of Motorola Droid Razr, which is for the Droid series of Verizon Wireless, and that comes with LTE connectivity. Morotorola Droid Razr Maxx is the Motorola Droid Razr that comes with an extended battery life for power users. So what are we going to pick today for our comparison? Well we are going with the global model Motorola Razr because that’s the closest Razr we have found a competitor in for Huawei Ascend P1 S. It’s also special for both Motorola and Huawei because what was once Motorola’s was acquired by Huawei with the release of Ascend. Motorola was boasting the world’s slimmest LTE smartphone with Motorola Droid Razr; but the irony is that, Huawei Ascend P1 S has claimed that position at the CES 2012. It does sound to be an interesting comparison and, in the due time, we’ll also discuss whether we have a need for such a thin smartphone, as well. Of course, a thin smartphone is always welcome, but then, there needs to be a line to that, as well, which cannot be crossed without a high cost. We would need to explore whether that is the case with the pricing schemes of Huawei Ascend, as well.

Huawei Ascend P1 S

The slimmest smartphone in the world scores a thickness of 6.7mm and dimensions of 127.4 x 64.3mm and weighs 130g. It sure is incredibly thin, and Huawei has made sure to make it look elegant, yet small. It has square edges and comes in a Black flavor. We think it might get sometime before you get used to having it in your hands, even though, it certainly doesn’t make your hand hurt. Huawei has given Ascend a 4.3 inches Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen featuring 960 x 540 pixels of resolution at 256ppi of pixel density. The screen is also reinforced with Corning Gorilla glass, to make it scratch-resistant.

The Huawei Ascend P1 S does indeed ascend with the 1.5GHz Cortex A9 dual core processor on top of TI OMAP 4460 chipset and PoweVR SGX540 GPU. It is backed up by 1GB of RAM, and the operating system is Android OS v4.0 IceCreamSandwich. This set up works very well in any given environment regardless of what you’re trying to do. May it be browsing, may it be a movie, and may it be gaming or May it be all of these at once, yet the processor would make the switches seamlessly and smoothly showing the power of the processor and operating system. Huawei has blessed Ascend P1 S with HSDPA connectivity and it also features Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity. We are content about the fact that Ascend can also act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and host some of your friends for a quick session of surfing.

The camera is an important part of a smartphone and Huawei Ascend comes with 8MP camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash with geo tagging enabled. Huawei also promises that we can use the camera for HDR images, which is fun. It can record 1080p HD videos at 30 frames per second. Since Ascend also has a front facing camera, it is ideal for video conferences bundled together with Bluetooth v3.0. We don’t have more information about the battery apart from the capacity that is to be 1670mAh, and we guess it’ll hold for around 6 hours.

Huawei Ascend P1

Ascend P1 also belongs to the same series as Ascend P1 S and has the same features, but slightly thicker with a measurement of 7.69mm and weighs only 110g. P1 also has a more powerful battery than P1 S, and which is 1800mAh.

Motorola Razr

Motorola Razr features a thickness of 7.1mm which used to be the best. It measures to 130.7 x 68.9 mm and has a 4.3inches Super AMOLED Capacitive Touchscreen featuring a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. It has the same pixel density as of Huawei Ascend and sure scores good compared to other smartphones in the market. Razr boasts a heavy build; ‘Built to take a Beating’ is how they put it. It is shielded with KEVLAR strong back plate, to suppress onslaught scratches and scrapes. The screen is made up of Corning Gorilla glass that defends the screen and a water-repellent force field of nanoparticles are used to shield the phone against water attacks. Feeling impressed? Well I sure am, for this is military standard safety for a smartphone.

It doesn’t matter how much it’s reinforced outside, if it’s not reconciled inside. But Motorola has delicately undertaken that responsibility and come up with a set of high-end hardware to match the outside. It has a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU on top of TI OMAP 4430 chipset. The 1GB RAM boosts its performance and enables the smoothness of operation. Android Gingerbread v2.3.5 takes the full throttle of the hardware offered by the smartphone and binds the user to an awesome user experience. Razr has an 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash, touch focus, face detection and image stabilization. Geo-tagging is also enabled with assisted GPS functionality available in the phone. The camera can record 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second, which is great. It also accommodates smooth video calling with the 2MP camera and Bluetooth v4.0 with LE+EDR.

Motorola Razr enjoys the HSPA+14.4Mbps connectivity for fast internet experience. It also facilitates the Wi-Fi connectivity with the built in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n module and has the ability to act as a hotspot. Razor has an active noise cancellation with dedicated mic and a digital compass. It also has a HDMI port, which is a very valuable addition as a multimedia device. It does not boast of completely redesigned sound system but Razr does not fail to exceed expectations in that too. But Motorola has promised an amazing talk time of 10 hours with a 1780mAh battery for Razr, and that certainly exceeds expectations in any case for a large phone like this.

Conclusion

A conclusion is seldom drawn when you encounter two opponents who resemble each other perfectly. How can you start to determine which is best among twins? Huawei Ascend P1 S and Motorola Razr definitely are twins that have the same design. Ascend even looks somewhat like Razr and the dimensions go very closely. The screen is identical even comparing the pixel densities. Both have the same processor on top of the same chipset backed up by the same GPU and 1GB of RAM. The only difference is that Huawei Ascend has a bit of an overclocked processor at 1.5GHz, while Razr remains at 1.2GHz. Both have the same optics, feature the same functionalities and capture quality images. Both come in black while Motorola Razr has the distinctive advantage of a Kevlar back plate to give it a military grade safety. The only new feature Huawei Ascend has introduced to the arena is been the slimmest smartphone on earth. This is rather commendable though, since breaking the 7mm barrier used to be a stagnating exercise for most of the vendors. On a separate perspective, we need to identify whether we are actually in need of such a thin smartphone, as well, if, for any reason, it’s been offered for a ridiculously high price for being the slimmest smartphone. That’s all we can say about these two handsets, and the choice is yours because both of these are almost identical to each other, and whichever the one you get, you’ll get the same performance out of them.
